  • try nokia 1320, mobileciti was selling it for around 277aud

  • I think for your purpose, either a Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 or 6.3 phone is your best bet for a straightforward solution that will do the job.

Various reliable sellers on eBay, most offering an express delivery option, and there's a 60,000 coupon 15% off deal tomorrow, that MAY work on your purchase.

I wouldn't exactly leave it too late on Sunday morning to make that purchase if you're otherwise keen, and the coupon does apply with any restrictions becoming apparent tomorrow.

  • Thanks but even cheaper if possible.

Something super basic! even under 5" if necessary. I just thought if the option was there bigger would be better/ less fiddly. It won't be used for anything other than for the new Paypal Here card reader.
I just don't want to tie up my main phone with this as other people will occasionally be using it.

    • Under 5 inches isn't 'phablet'.
The world is your oyster at the 4.7 inch screen mark. Virtually any phone will do, in that case.

Maybe a search for a 7 inch tab that takes a SIM (Asus-branded, or Nexus) will turn up something for you on eBay, or Gumtree…

If you find anything - of any description - right now, like that, for less than the price of a Mega 5.8, that would be a good result for you.

  • Look for a Kogan Agora phone then. 5 inches. Basic and does the job.

  • How about a chinese android with 3g and bluetooth with express shipping (DHL) $250

    http://www.pandawill.com/q9599-smartphone-65-inch-fhd-screen…

  • Maybe tabs from this deal a few days ago will start turning up on eBay in the next few days, without too huge a mark-up…

There are also (lower than that spec) wi-fi tabs variously kicking around in stores for similar cheap.

I mention both, because you may not have considered just how easy it is to tether data from your own mobile, or a very cheap separate Android, or a cheap hotspot modem - to a basic 7 inch wi-fi tab?

I was under the impression that Kogan had sold the entirety of his batch of Agora-badged phones, but scrimshaw's suggestion is also a good cheap option in your circumstance.

    • I think the OP may want a 3g enabled tab and not just a wifi one because a Paypal here access point is going to be used by someone other than him (e.g he runs a store and employees will use it). As he said, other people occasionally need it to receive payments (and it might be on-the-go, where wifi access is not readily available and tethering is not convenient).

It's kind of like a portable EFTPOS machine.

      • Yeah, I didn't re-read his reply to me after coming back to the thread to add…

Assumed from the price imperative that he was putting on the situation, that he was a 'one man band' looking for the cheapest options, and that tethering might be feasible for him, if only on a temporary basis .

  • Thanks for the options and suggestions
Yeah pretty much a one man band, plus the missus sometimes one of the kids.

Oops pardon my ignorance, because I had never been interested in tablets before I wrongly just assumed they were all 3g capable, including the cheapies.

I will probably just get into Dicks or jb and grab a cheap phone with the biggest screen I can between $100-150 mark

Due to the current excitement over chinese spyware and trojans I won't go down the yumcha route for a dedicated banking phone.

Just got the Paypal reader and have only ever used a mobile eftpos before so it is just a trial really to see how it goes for the odd occasion.

    • Tablets with SIM slots are the exception rather than the rule and you almost always pay a big premium for the inclusion.

Some cheap wi-fi tabs reference being 3G 'capable' or 'compatible' in their specs. It almost always just means that they are compatible with a - usually very limited range - of usb modem dongles.

Read the last paragraph of this comment I made a few days ago here and then follow the link directly above it.

You could indeed do a great deal worse than a G526, if you can get one anywhere near that price. Has a 4.5 inch screen, which may be big enough for you, and is frequency compatible with all the telcos and their resellers.

Buying a phone from China online - and using its stock firmware - comes with now, acknowledged, risks. Phones likes Huawei and (usually re-badged) ZTE phones actually sold in Western markets like ours, face a whole other level of firmware scutiny - so no need to be quite as concerned in quite the same way, just because of the phone's origin.

      • Thanks Tas, that sale on the G526 for some reason didn't make it into QLD Kmart stores unfortunately - that's a cracking price!

Quite a bit dearer up here and by the time I added unlock fee + sd card there wasn't much difference so ended up going for a Grey 16GB Moto G that I got for $180 with the current 15% off ebay/paypal sale.

        4.4 kitkat was a bonus

        • That's a good deal for the 16GB version. You'll be happy with the Moto G.
