The 'spell-checker' for this site seems to be set to US English; or is that my pute?

It seems that the 'spell-checker' function that automatically applies on this site when constructing posts is set to US English, rather than UK English. Am I right about this, or am I mistaken/ is this language preference actually being applied by my computer? If it is a setting on the site, then I suggest that it should be changed to UK English. It's annoying having 'colour', 'sympathise' etc. flagged as errors. If it is actually my pute that's responsible, could someone please tell me how/where I can change a setting such that UK English is the default language by which the spelling is automatically checked?

Most likely your web browser. Are you running Google Chrome? If so, misspell something then right click it. Then look for the "Spell-checker options". Click "English (United Kingdom)"

    • Thanks, this has annoyed me too. It is also customisable in Firefox using the same procedure — right click and look for Languages in the menu (I selected English (Australia)) but you can add your own additional dictionaries.

It would be your browser doing spell checking on the fly. So check its settings. Spell checking by the website while technically feasible would be a massive load on the server, requiring a request on every character, and noticeably slowing response. However Google search boxes can send a request per character for autocompletion.

  • Who needs an automatic spell checker? You should really learn to do it manually yourself.

    • You missed the point. We were complaining that the spell checker is getting the spelling wrong. The fact we recognised it shows that we do know how to spell.

    • It's actually more a typo detector than a spell checker.

  • pute? I haven't seen that before!
    I thought comp. was sufficient
