Air Asia cancelled home leg of my flight in July. Options?

Hey,

Got a mail that AAX cancelled my connecting flight to Perth.
They have moved it to the following day.

This means myself and OH miss a days work and need to foot the bill to stay in KL.

I have no travel insurance (yet). Will/Should AAX compensate me?

  • Will/Should AAX compensate me?

Probably not, they are a LCC and if you do a search here you will find similar results by others.

Although some claim to have got small compensation, although they are the lucky few.

Even with Travel Insurance, you may or may not have got compensation, this depends on the insurer. Some exclude delays caused by the carrier unless they are mechanical in nature. Reschedules aren't included.

Unfortunately AirAsia does have form with these rescheduling. I got caught with having to leave a day earlier for the same reason and this added a day of accommodation plus a leave adjustment form to work.

  • Generally your insurance policy will cover this but you need to check your cover.

  • So unfair.

What if the scheduled flight moved two days away or even further? You have to accept whatever they throw onto you? I find myself trying to avoid LCC airlines as long as the fare difference is not too tempting to brush aside. Especially when flying to Bangkok, train access to BKK and the all of the benefits coming with it makes me avoid DMK as much as possible.

But sadly this big charges for any change strategy is being picked up quickly by all airlines.

  • You will not get compensation from AA. Either accept the change and have a longer holiday, or get a refund (But it will take 3 months to receive) and book an alternative flight/alternative airline.

  • This happened to me in mid-late May, AA cancelled my home leg from Japan via KL. The direct fares from Osaka back to Sydney with Jetstar/qantas/JAL were way higher than the cost to shack up in a nice 5 star in KL for a day so I just made the most of the unexpected extra holiday day.

That said, next time I'm forking out the extra $$ for full service so I won't run as high a risk of my schedule being stuffed up by flight cancellations for 'commercial reasons'
