I'm hunting for a cheap ssd for my 4 yr old laptop. Considering Intel 520 128gb for $85 at Msy. Although it seems to an older model. Need some advice or recommendations on it. Cheers
Best Bargain on SSD?

I didn't know any of that and just ordered a 520 for my desktop gaming PC. I'm sure it'll be an improvement over the 320GB 7200RPM low end Seagate.
ANY solid state drive will be an improvement over a mechanical hard drive. Unless you're talking about USB flash or SD cards which generally use very slow flash memory.
Thank you for ur input. I shall research on NAND and IOPS as I have no clue wt that is. I was also considering SanDisk ultra pro in a 256 gb as that is the cheapest I could find us$109 + shipping from Amazon.
My 2 cents only: For less warranty hassles I would buy from a local shop, be patient and wait for the next deal from MSY or Shopping Express.
But Amazon does provide pretty decent service and will reimburse the costs of shipping back a defective item.
theres a sale on some on msy now, check out the post on here
I bought two of the intel ones you mentioned and they are very good. Same price at computer alliance brisbane.
4 year old laptop would most likely have a SATA2 port, meaning you won't see the full speed benefits of the topend SSDs which are SATA3. Check manufacturer's website to confirm.
I would like to increase the speed on my SATA2 port pc. Should I try to get a SATA2 device? No benefit of SATA3?
Are they still available cheaply? You can't get a SATA2 ssd any more, not to my knowledge anyway. They went out of fashion years ago.
If you want SATA3 in your desktop, upgrade the motherboard.
When buying an SSD for your laptop, here are some things to consider:
- Does it have an msata connector? If so, you can keep your existing drive and have an extra SSD drive.
- If not, can you buy a hard drive caddy to replace the DVD drive?
- Or If you can't afford an SSD big enough to hold all your stuff, consider a hybrid like this one. It won't be as fast as an SSD but it will make a difference, and it has a lot of capacity:

All in all, go for warranty and price - in a four year old laptop you won't notice performance differences between SSDs.
I notice there hasn't been any SSD deals lately - or I have missed seeing them here.
2 sandisk ultra deals lately. though some info out there suggests a higher than average fail rate. I've had trouble with a few SSD brands except Samsung so I'll wait for a Samsung deal personally.
Love my 840 Pro but they do come at a premium, the Evo's would be the cost effective option.
Are you seeking reliability or speed?
If reliability is a concern then a 520 Intel SSD is a good choice as they have 5 years warranty. Note that a 520 is in fact faster than a 530.
If you want speed then you should look into a Samsung 840 Pro, but you're also paying a price premium for a higher write speeds which you may or may not notice at all.
I say this because unless you're into benchmarking with a timer and counting in seconds on how long your computer takes to boot, you probably won't notice the difference between an Intel 520 and a 840 Pro.
Larger SSD's will have more NAND flash memory channels and better IOPS, so if you're comparing a 128GB drive against a 240GB one, the larger drive will perform faster.
