I'm planning on getting the Wii U, to power the external hard drive. I'm told I will need a USB Y Splitter cable,
female to 2 male, I've been searching around ebay and the internet and unable to find it, anyone know where I can get one?

I too had the same issue.
Got mine off of Ebay from this seller worldofkit for @2.74.
They currently do not have anymore in stock though.Click Here for a search on Ebay for the cables.
Point of note: Even though worldofkit showed MEL as seller location, when I clicked on their link it showed 'Based in Hong Kong'. I even performed a search for Oz only auction but. Meh…who cares.
I got my cable in a week and it's working perfect on my new Wii U. Just have to plug it into the two front slots and off you go.
Good luck!
I used this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-2-0-ATA-2-5-SATA-Hard-Driver-… which is the size of a typical laptop hard drive. It's nifty, too.
I might add that you only need to use dual USB if your drive is a 'portable' drive that does not plug into the wall.
The Wii U doesn't put out enough power from a single USB port. Gotta double up.I'm using an old Verbatim portable drive hence my need for the old-school Y cable.
Be careful when using an external drive. I have a Y cable powering my canvio portable which I admit now is a mistake. It still can't draw enough power even after a Y cable and I now blame as the reason my MK8 data corrupted. Currently all I can do is keep game data on the wii u internally and copy and delete as required.
Cheers for the reply, I'm actually looking for something like this, http://www.amazon.com/PCD-Universal-Adapter-Female-Connector…
As you can see in the picture, 1 female to 2 male output.
The portable hard drive i'm planning on using is http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Toshiba-1TB-USB-3-0-Portable-Exte…
Don't use toshiba! Read my comment.
Toshiba drives typically have an above-average fail rate. Trust me, I work in IT :O
at that price i'd probably consider a better brand maybe?
would something like this work?

Shouldn't have too much trouble finding one on ebay but i'm unable to look myself right now. Just to be sure though, you only need a Y-cable for a portable hdd, not one that is externally powered.
