  • Also, does anyone have any tips for mowing a small patch of grass?

Its like 6mx1m and i don't wanna get a lawnmower just for that. I tried using a pedestal fan but it didn't work too great.
Opted for the 5 wood and hockey stick. Needless to say its pretty dodge now lol.

If the area is small a Snipper will do the job. You can get it cheap off Gumtree for like $20.

Not sure if joking, but LOL either way.

      • yeah we did it at like midnight, just kinda stopped when it got caught in the grass haha

  • It really depends on what you intend to spend, use it for, and how long you need it to last

If you are looking for longevity out of it and intend to keep it for 10+ years I can personally recommend Victa, with a briggs and stratton motor. I remember mowing lawns with it as a kid, and still going strong 15+ years later

A cheap electric whipper snipper will do the trick! Can usually pick them up for under $40 or $20 secondhand http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/legana/other-home-garden/whip…

are you even basically mechanically minded and have some time to stuff about?

lawn mowers are extremely basic. if you find a lawn mower during hard rubbish and when you pull the cord and there is some resistance (indicating cylinder compression) then you are off to a good start.

problems with lawn mowers usually involve fuel or spark plug issues.

when I find a lawnmower I usually change the spark plug, oil and air filter. most of the time that will fix any issues.

Otherwise, look for your local lawn mower repair guy and they often have re-conditioned machines. otherwise gum-tree or cash converters

    • I'd second that - Victas and whipper snippers are usually two-stroke motors. The two reasons for hard starting in small two-strokes are 1, spark plug failure, 2, carbon build-up in the exhaust ports. The plug is a few dollars to replace. You don't need to dismantle the motor to clear the ports - just remove the exhause and break out the carbon with a BRASS or hard-wood probe. [You need something softer than aluminium :-)]

  • Push mowers are worth considering.

    Benefits:
Fairly Cheap (Bunnings lists an Ozito model for $64) — even cheaper second hand.
    Reliable (no fuel or maintenance).
Better a mowing than a line trimmer.
    Feature an adjustable height.
Convenient (take it out, use it and put it away).

    Limitations:
Only useful for small to small-medium sections… as they require physical effort to push.
Sometimes they are difficult to get close to the fence line (normal mowers have this problem to).

  • Pour scotch over it…..
… it will come up half cut! :-)

Failing that… easy fix, a cordless whipper snipper.

this is OzBargain, bag of goon will do the same trick :)

  • I bought a Sanli clone from Kmart.. really good unit, still going fine after 2 years. Note: it doesn't start after one pull like a Honda, but it is still working, fine. I service it once a year, I just did a second service last week.

  • toro lawnmowers always go pretty well

Love my Bosch Rotak battery powered one…not what I'd call "bargain territory" but it's so damn easy to use you look for excuses to take it out.

I have an electric powered small Ozito lawn mower for my small garden. Bought it more than 12 months ago from Burnings for something like $98.00 .Still works well; no maintenance service done so far . No pulling required. Just plug in and it goes. Very happy with it.

  • At Bunnings Chatswood: Victa can't remember the model but used to be $289 now selling for $189. better check for stock availability coz I saw this last week.
