Difference between Chromecast and other similar products?

Yeah.

what's the difference between Chromecast and other similar products?

Chromecast ,as I understand , allows you to streem stuff between your smartphone, tablet etc to your TV.

what's the difference between it and , say, this unit from Aliexpress

  • I assume from looking at the comments that the main difference would be access to paid services like netflix, hulu etc. The Chromecast obviously allows for the drm that is associated with these services whilst the others most likely do not.

    • The Miracast device linked duplicates whatever is displayed on your phone/tablet/computer screen..
The CHromecast doesn't do that.. it either:
      1) receives a hyper-link to whatever you want to do (ie watch House of Cards on Netflix or watch a cat video on Youtube)
      or
      2) receives and displays a video stream from chrome or video streaming app.

The functional difference being that you can turn off your screen while using Chromecast, but you must keep the screen on (and subsequently drain battery or have your phone/tablet charging) to use a Miracast device.
Miracast can therefore do more.. cause anything that runs on your phone can be sent by Miracast, but with a big downside.

      • uh, ok. miracast = mirror cast

        thanks to both of you.

        • PS scotteth is incorrect.. Anything that Chromecast can do Miracast can also do.

        • So if you have a charging point next to the couch then it's no big deal, yes?

  • Im selling one in the classifieds section for $40 if your interested!

  • I've owned my Chromecast for a few months. If you use something like Skifta (Android App) you can play DLNA to most smart TVs or smart DVD/Blu Ray players without Chromecast. Allcast app will do the same but works well with Chromecast.
Chromecast works seamlessly within Google ecosystem. Play movies and content from Play store to Chromecast. Play Youtube beautifully on your Chromecast enabled TV.
I don't know how the CCast would go attached to a Home Theatre Receiver as I don't have one but I imagine this would work well for Audio - but so does Bluetooth streaming (requires BT receiver). The USA services such as Hulu and Netflix can't be spoken of in AU as they're not (easily) available. This reduces the usefulness of the Chromecast from it's intended functionality.

For ease of use the Chromecast gets a 10. For usefulness I'll give it a 6.5 but this figure increases all the time as DEVs work to bring new features third part apps and Google Apps. - having said that I'm getting another.
