(Need help) Target refund policy for Xbox One

Edit: Went back to my local Target store (not the one I originally tried to return it to) and they ended up giving me a refund, they did however try to get out of it by telling me they need to send it back to Microsoft to check for water damage because I had it for 11 days but after telling them the shit the previous Target store put me through and after the manager spoke to someone for half an hour over the phone she ended up doing the right thing.

Thanks for all the help!

  • Nah man, i don't think you're being unreasonable. You've paid good dollar for that console, and if you're not happy with your purchase, you should be able to take it back and return it. They're being unreasonable. You should be able to get a refund for it. Or at least the replacement console.

  • sounds similar to an experience i had at vodafone.

got iphone, iphone was DOA, they made me wait a week and a bit while they sent it back to Apple for them to confirm it was DOA (smart, right?) before giving me a new one on the spot.

i know its bloody annoying, and its not unreasonable to be pissed. my only advice is if you kick up enough of a stink (which i wish i did) most retail staff will do what they can to avoid drama.

    best of luck man.

  • I think part of the problem s that their online and stores are fairly seperate.
Witness the ridiculous couriering in of stock when hey have it in shelf for click n collect.

Your best bet as always is to go to your bank and put in a stop payment and you will find they magically arrange a courier pickup/ delivery or refund pretty fast. Money talks. In store staff are pretty clueless.

May be best getting eb or jb hifi to price match next time as they do know a bit about gaming. Target dont.

Your argument is completely reasonable and if they told you the same thing twice on the phone, they should make good on their word regardless of Target or Microsoft's policy.

I would suggest either posting on Target Australia's Facebook wall or send them a private message.
This has helped resolve issues I have had in the past with Vodafone and Dick Smith. Give them a piece of your mind but in the most polite and factual way.

    Good luck mate!

    • Also write to headquarters or call them up

I had the unpleasant experience of regularly being assigned to the refunds counter at Target while I was a uni student.

The policy in 2007 (and hasn't changed as far as I'm aware) was that if electronic items were returned within 2 weeks of the purchase date they were classified as DOA and we had to swap them over- after that it was dependent on the brand and their particular requirements for whether returns had to be assessed or not. The department managers at the store I worked at tended to cave and give customers what they wanted anyway- that was when Target had their '100% Happy' campaign, and they didn't want to have any complaints about customer service to head office…

Call customer service/head office in the morning and they should sort it out (and hopefully also give you a gift voucher for the inconvenience!), or as 729fx said, a Facebook post should prompt them to act reasonably.

Write on Target's Facebook wall, once every second day or so, you'll see a more reasonable outcome. They might even bend backwards for you

Bright light glue, buttons not straight, I think you are too picky. The faults seem minor, I would not worry about them at all.

    • They were minor, but now the casing (mainly the shiny parts) is damaged a lot because of the carelessness of the guy at the previous Target store who opened it up to get the serial. I've tried wiping it but the marks won't come off.

  • Your rights

    • repair
    • replacement (exchange)
    • refund at your desecration as long as its not because you bought by mistake or changed your mind

See manager, record conversation and ask for a refund and if refused go either over his/her head or the relevant government department store. MSY/Gamedude and lots of retailers have tried it on over refunds and have ALL LOST and thats why they have to display those A4 rulings of shame all over the store.

Im not picking on them but they were about the worse but by no means they only ones to come a croppa from the TIO/ACCC/Fair Trading…

    • Do I need to tell them I'm recording, or can I just start a recording on my phone and leave it in my pocket?

      • Yes, you need to tell them you're recording and they need to agree.

  • In regards to the 'line' underneath the disc tray - was there a "do not move console with disc inside tray" sticker there when you unboxed the console? If not, then it sounds to me like you were given a refurbished console.

But yeah, their returns are a bit of a joke. I had purchased Titanfall for the XB1 around the games launch and had to wait for them to receive the game from the online department. Didn't realise I had to wait 2 weeks so I purchased it elsewhere.

Received the email confirmation that I can get the game from my local Target store but chose to cancel it and get a refund. They went round and round and came to the conclusion that I never put in the request and even if I did, it was too late to get a refund.

Just keep at it. Microsoft don't nor have they ever had authority over a retailer when it came to in-store returns within a certain amount of time. I returned a 'broken' PS4 controller to EB Games more than 2 months after purchase and they replaced it on the spot.

    • It had the sticker, the glew was under that where the bottom and front panel joined. I could peel a little bit of it off but not all of it.
