Macpac Halo down Jacket $99.95 (Was $279), Sundowner $149.95 (Was $379)

100

Macpac has the male and female versions of two different down jackets on sale this week with a hefty discount. Available to non-members and I believe the offer is instore too.

Decent price for a non-synthetic filled puffer jacket, and they come in a range of colours.

  • Quality wise, any good?

  • +1

Love my Halo jacket, long lasting and pretty warm. Just be aware that there is no extra lining on the flap over the front zipper (unlike other more expensive down jackets), so the nylon of the flap has a very annoying tendency to get stuck in the zipper at times.

  • Mad_llama makes a very valid point, but for an entry level jacket they're more than reasonable quality and there is decent down fill in them relative to others of the same price.

Is this supposed to be a master chief jacket with built-in shields for ballistic resistance? what is the relation to Halo?

    • +1

It is the model name assigned by Macpac.

  • Grabbed one for me and one for the wife last year for a trip to the UK - absolutely love it and lived in it!

I concur with mad_llama as we have got lining stuck on a number of occasions.

Have had the occasional feather come through but nothing to worry about.

It's not as 'waterproof' as others but it packs down better - might be a trade off. We keep a disposable poncho in the inside pocket, just in case.

Packs into it's own bag without a struggle and makes a neat pillow for plane/train if you pack it right.

Inside pocket is a good size and easily accessed.

I found the mens sizing pretty good and the arms were long enough…… my shape is medium with long arms so I tend to buy large but they bulk up, this one didn't.

Probably the best value for $100 I've ever spent on clothing.

    • So you bought it 100 dollars as well?

      • Yes $99 each jacket in Brisbane about 15 months ago

  • Hmmm, would anyone know if this jacket would do for 1 - 6ºCelsius temperatures?

    • Plenty warm for this.

    • I think so. We were in as low as -2 with thermal undershirt and light woollen jumper with no problem.

  • Anyone offer any comment on quality between macpac, Kathmandu's, mountain designs or other international brands?

    • My humble opinion on local brands is that Mont > Macpac > MD > Kathmandu. My current jacket is a Mountain Hardwear model that was good quality but wasn't cheap, and you wouldn't go wrong with Patagonia, Western Mountaineering, Feathered Friends or Rab.

IMHO, most North Face merch is relatively overpriced and too fashion focussed, though some of their expedition focussed gear is great (but expensive).

  • Have anyone ever paid full price for these jackets? Way expensive

  • Thanks, just what I needed :)

  • Mountain Designs also has their Reactor down jacket for $99 as part of a 24hr click frenzy sale. Think the ones above are better, but others may differ.
