I'm referring to the description in the post above.

    • +3

Chicken and vegetable, beef and cheese, lite and the original beef pie :)

  • +10

The quality are pretty bad these days, all watery and hardly any meat and veggies in them

    • +9

I know someone that works in a factory making these

If you saw what went into these and where the ingredients came from you would not eat them or even feed them to your dog

Probably worth giving to the mother in law though ;-)

    • +2

      What no blackbirds?

      • +5

That would probably be an improvement…

    • +1

These budget cuts. Seriously taking it's toll on everything we love.

  • And woolies has to be closed in SA. Dam you queen

    • +3

Order online and find a free shipping code?

  • +4

    isn't that $5 saved?

    • +5

No it's $5.01 saved. Every cent counts to an ozbargainer.

  • Just got back from my local store and they were $4. Must be online only.

  • Maths issue or typo with the price

  • +6

Now, forgive me because I don't generally buy frozen pies, but when did the normal price for four of these get up to $8.01…and who would be stupid enough to pay that??? :O

    • +5

Higher prices suggest quality, but it's often a deception.

    • +3

but when did the normal price for four of these get up to $8.01…

pretty much never.. these are regularly around the $5 mark so its a saving but there are better frozen pies in the freezer section if you were spending $8

      • +8

pretty much never.. these are regularly around the $5 mark

Thanks, yeah I thought that might have been the case…so the $8 price tag is just pie-perbole! ;)

    Quoted From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meat_pie_(Australia_and_New_Zealand).

Note this data is pre-GFC and I'd be sure it's a lot worse now.

In April 2002, the Australian Consumers Association conducted a study of 22 frozen meat pies available in supermarkets. They found three brands did not meet the minimum 25 per cent meat content requirement set by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), they also found that the fat content ranged from 15 to 35 grams of fat per pie. The ACA study was of a select group of frozen meat pies in supermarkets, thus the study does not account for freshly baked meat pies of which the meat content and nutritional value varies from bakery to bakery. Another study by ACA in 2006 found 5 of the 23 pie products tested had less than the minimum 25% meat required.

In 2006, The ACA awarded pie manufacturer Black and Gold "The CHOICE Shonky Award for UnAustralian Content" for their pies found to contain just 17% meat.[10]

The meats allowed by FSANZ in a meat pie are beef, buffalo, camel, cattle, deer, goat, hare, pig, poultry, rabbit and sheep. Kangaroo meat, a leaner alternative, is also sometimes used. However, most pie manufacturers specify 'beef' in their ingredients list; typically, those using other types of meat will simply put 'meat' in the list instead. FSANZ's definition of meat includes snouts, ears, tongue roots, tendons and blood vessels. Only offal (such as brain, heart, kidney, liver, tongue, tripe) must be specified on the label. Wild animals ("slaughtered … in the wild state") may not be used.[11]

…You are likely eating savoury bits of artery, intestinal lining etc, more commonly sold as dog food. Research and you will be shocked. Even hot dogs have more meat content.

    • Mmmm… Camel… Sounds so appetising…

      • +2

I prefer the tongue roots. omg how friggin awful.

      • +2

        Needs more toe

        • +1

          Toe? Camel toe?…

      • +2

i wondered why i was bloated afterwards…..must be retaining water

    • +1

Awesome, I've been hankering for some snouts, ears, tongue roots, tendons and blood vessels.

    • I saw that article in the SMH a few months ago, and haven't touched a pie since. Not to get all sanctimonious or anything (as I do love my meat) but it borders on the disturbing to consume the aforementioned list of animals inside a meat pie.

    • +2

Damn, I eat frozen pies occasionally and this is a big turn off. Any brands that are okay or should they all be avoided?

    • +2

No need to go to fine dining. You have got all the delicacies on one plate.

    • +3

beef, buffalo, camel, cattle, deer, goat, hare, pig, poultry, rabbit and sheep. Kangaroo meat…snouts, ears, tongue roots, tendons and blood vessels…offal (such as brain, heart, kidney, liver, tongue, tripe) …Wild animals ("slaughtered … in the wild state")…bits of artery, intestinal lining etc

I acknowledge that by modern Western standards I'm fortunate to recount that I've had a fairly diverse range of life experience; and depending on your level of cultural diversity/travels many others may have had similar experiences; but in the course of my geographical, sociological & chronological journey, I've knowingly & willingly consumed all of the above (and more) at various times in my life!

Bringing them all together in a delicious, pastry covered package sounds like all WIN to me! ;)

      • +1

So you're saying we can obtain your degree of worldliness and cultural learnings by simply having these pies delivered to our freezer without getting off our arses. Though I do hope tomato sauce is on special.

        • +1

Yup, spot on…global village bro! :)

        • +1

The Mexican style dead horse from master foods is really nice, had a little bit on 2 of the last 4 pies I'll have for a while on them

    • +6

$3 a pack is an offally good price, then.

    • More seriously though…

Kangaroo meat, a leaner alternative, is also sometimes used.

Wild animals ("slaughtered … in the wild state") may not be used.

Isn't all roo meat here obtained from 'wild' kangaroos? They aren't farmed, are they. Am I mistaken or misinterpreting those parts of the quote?

  • +3

Vili's are easily the best, nothing beats them!

    • +4

If you want them cheap, vilis cafe sells a box of 24 2nd for 25dollars. Most have nothing wrong, might be too puffy for the wrapping conveyor belt or made too many

      • They wouldn't fit in my freezer and don't eat them that often but a nice idea!

  • I used to enjoy Boscastle, but even they have had some really dodgy bits in their pies lately and while they use large pieces of beef, they don't trim the thick gristle off and it ruins the experience.

I think the most expensive component is human intervention where the meat could be a bit cleaner on the way into the cooking process, so most just don't bother. Hint to Boscastle - gristle doesn't disappear during cooking or reheating, and if chicken smells very gamey people won't appreciate it being in a 'quality' chicken pie.

  • +1

If it's not a Mrs Macs take it back.

    • +3

I find Balfours to make pretty good pies

      • +1

Mm, Balfours, herbert adams and Sargents are my go to pies. You can actually see large chunks of meat in them and they taste really good.

  • On their facebook they have posted about this twice. The first one between 1pm and 5pm for $3 (Save $4.45). The next one being between 4pm-8pm for $3 (save $4.40). Mentions instore but nothing about online.

  • $3 pie? :O how irrational.

Also I was going to have pie for lunch. Damn you giggles.

  • Any idea if instore would price match?

  • +4

Well I'm pretty sure if you buy the Chicken pies it should have bloody chicken in it..

Been eating 4n20 for a while and no problem, apart from this hump on my back and the desire to store water & wonder off into the desert for days at a time, must be that camel, other than that cant complain.

  • Question for those who purchase online:

Is it cheaper to buy a $4 pie instore or $3 online? (providing you walk to the shops)

  • Well if this is online only instore is normal price, if instore can price match since supermarkets do price match now days only if they have stock and are close by if that makes sense.

  • +1

I noticed one of the varieties is "beef and cheese" while the other is "meat" pie. I don't really buy frozen pies but thought it was safe to assume "beef" was in fact beef?

    • It's similar to sausages - beef sausages have to contain primarily beef, whereas "meat" sausages are a mix of whatever they feel like putting in…

Basically - beef = good, meat = bad.

  • They are $3 from 4pm-8pm at my local store.
