Formal Dresses - safe to buy online?

My daughter's Y12 formal is coming up and we're hunting around for dresses. Budget is around $200 - $250 and most local retailers that we've looked at don't seem to get anywhere near that mark, or have the style my daughter wants, so we're thinking of trying an online solution.

Doing a google search brings up many sites that appear to be Chinese dress factories selling direct to the public. Wondering if anyone here has had any experience with these places? One in particular that my daughter has found is favodresses.com.

We're in Adelaide if anyone has any local suggestions to try.

  • Have a look at Sears (USA) they have some really nice things and not expensive to send here.
Keep a look out for specials and codes you can use.

    • +1

Cool thanks, we'll browse around the site and see if we find anything she likes.

  • Have you tried copy cat in rundle mall? Forever new makes good dresses too.

    • Thanks for the suggestion. My daughter tells me she's had a look in both those places but couldn't see anything that suited her.

  • I have many colleagues/family/friends who've purchased formal dresses online (lots off ebay) for a fraction of what it would cost them in a boutique, and been very happy with the results.

One of my female colleagues got a stunning wedding dress for ~$200 that would have cost literally thousands locally. She was prompted to do this when she went to a local bridal boutique & was about to order a rather pricey dress, only to have the assistant tell her that her measurements were sent to China with the order to be made there & shipped anyway!

Provided you get the measurements correct, you should be fine IMHO. :)

  • My sister had an absolute disaster when she ordered a formal dress online. I would definitely do a quick google search to find reviews that aren't on the website itself. Wedding forums tend to have alot of reviews on websites that make dresses as alot of women order BM dresses online.
The other option is eBay. I have quite a few formal gowns that I've bought from ebay that have only been worn once. I have an addiction to Mr K dresses and have purchased all of mine for less than $30/each including shipping.
All arrived after being cleaned, and they were in perfect condition.

  • If you are looking for bridal dress then you can have a look at Sarah Janks wedding collection at http://www.sarahjanks.com/.

  • I use a variety of places to find.

Have had experience getting them done in China just ensure the dress is the real picture, many chinese sites take fake pictures or pictures from other sites that do not reflect the actual dress itself. Look on Ali Express http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Custom-Made-2014-New-Fashion-…

Alternatively keep an eye out for used or never worn dresses on eBay ebay.com.au.

  • Online shopping is more convenient. We can compare products by various brand at the same place and choose the best deal.

  • Try www.asos.com ?

I've heard buying from chinese factories can be quite risky (quality/design is not quite right etc)

  • I wouldn't.
    I hope she has fun!

What type of style is she after and what is her body type? Perhaps we can all look for her ;)

  • I've seen a lot of horror stories about them, and devastated buyers who don't have time to have a replacement made. A LOT of those sites steal pics from all over the web, claiming the product to be theirs when it isn't.

  • I don't know if they have anything suitable but I have bought lots of dresses from Birdsnest. They have a $7.95 return/exchange shipping policy.

They have hundreds of dresses. Here is a link just to their formal section http://www.birdsnest.com.au/womens/dresses#_lh=1&filters=135…
