Paypal currency conversion verus 28 degrees CC

Hi,
Was wondering if anyone knows if the 28 degrees currency conversion is better than Paypal's?

Thanks.

28 Degrees is tied to the Mastercard conversion rates. Mastercard conversion rates are much better than Paypal's.

PayPal currency conversion is ALWAYS a rip off

    • eBay's exchange rates OTOH are wonderful. Unfortunately they won't let you trade at them.

a visa/mastercard card with no foreign transaction fees will be a couple of % better than paypal's conversion rates.

      I think a lot more than a couple…

Just going off memory, it looked like 5%+ higher

    YES.

  • Thanks guys, I will make sure not to use PayPal conversion then :-)

you can check the visa exchange rates for a particular date http://usa.visa.com/personal/card-benefits/travel/exchange-r… . if you google, you should find a similar site for mastercard

so you can get some sort of quantitative comparison with paypal's rates. however, credit card transactions usually take a day or two to be processed, so the exact rate you get might fluctuate slightly.

There is one exception that I would use Paypal over 28 degrees and that's if the shop is charging in AUD. I know you can do that with The Book Depository and Ozgameshop but there's probably more. You won't get hit with any international fee by paying in AUD with Paypal.

    • Just get charged higher exchange rate by an overseas retailer

I know wiggles are one of the nastiest when it comes to exchange rate.

Wiggles looks like they have someone look at the data for items and decide how much +% they should have when buyers buy in AUD. I've seen 20% difference from the exchange rate, usually its 5-10% higher.

I've stopped buying from wiggles for almost a year now. I don't like the above snide tactic, and that they don't give us decent promotional codes anymore. If you change your country to UK or any other they get codes.

I did a test recently on some overseas purchases and paypal seem to have really lifted their rates (I went through as if I were going to buy it with paypal and it told me what I would be charged, then paid with 28 degrees) wasn't a very big difference but still was in 28 degrees favour slightly.

  • When I last calculated it earlier this year. PayPal added 3% to the normal exchange rate to convert money from one currency to another.

Also, "paying" via PayPal is different than converting your currency via PayPal. Go to the PayPal's currency conversion page and they let you pick currency conversion or paying. Paying is more expensive. So what you need to do before paying is deposit the amount into your PayPal account and convert it. And then in the checkout page make sure you're paying from your PayPal balance instead of the credit card.
