Bangkok update all fine.

Arrived in BKK Wednesday and can report all is well.
Very few tourists so getting through immigration is a breeze. Low loadings on planes means more space for you. Quick baggage collection and exit to taxi rank. Less traffic on roads and thus quicker travel into city after peak and speaking comparatively.
MBK hardly any tourists ,seemed like more store sales people than customers up till four p.m. when I left. Food court on sixth floor busy with locals as usual
Stall holders report business has been very slow
Everything seems normal. Haven't seen a soldier yet. I believe if I go to Victory monument in the evening I will be entertained by military band but cannot verify.

Interestingly a man (tout?)asked me in English where was I going and when I replied Siam,,the main interchange sky train station, he told me not to go there as there were many police and soldiers there. I smelt a scam coming and replied in Thai, you are joking! He left.New scam?

Summary, all is calm and it is easy to get around. Great shopping, lots of sales. Fantastic Thai food is plentiful. Weather is hot, not very humid, gentle breezes and rainy season is approaching. Am looking forward to a decent evening storm which is yet to eventuate

So pleased to be here and it is very safe . Having a great time. Will update again. Will be here for three weeks. JoyV

For the record I live in Australia and am here in BKK on holiday. Have been visiting Thailand for over 15 years. I know how concerned people are about coming here while Martial Law is imposed. Thought it would be useful to share my current experiences with others. JoyV

I appreciate this post! I'm not going but I know someone who is so this will be helpful to give them a more positive light on what it's going to be like before they go. :)

  • I smelt a scam too. haha, just kidding. I love Thailand, and I believe it's basically safe to travel there. But except for those who have booked their flights, don't want to lose their money, most of us would just stay away and see how it goes. It's not the only option to have fun overseas any way.

I, personally, enjoy traveling during a low season, which means no crowd, no rip-off prices, no hustle and bustle, no need of pre-booking everything, no feelings of being snubbed for patronizing their businesses. All of these together would make a more relaxing and enjoyable holiday. But as for a situation of the same but being caused by martial law? I am not quite sure. A simple question, can you still go to a bar in late night to enjoy a show in Bangkok without feeling any pressure?

  • Understand that curfew will be lifted from all of Thailand today Only watched part of latest broadcast by military top brass and heard that they wish to encourage tourism. Check out latest on Richard Barrow's twitter feed.
This is my first visiting rainy season.Have spent four days a little south of Hua Hin. Rained twice, late afternoon. Had lots of time for walking and swimming. Friends went on tours and had a ball. Sorry not into bars and shows. Lady boy show is on twice nightly at Asia Hotel.- Reports indicate Pattaya is as usual. Back in Bangkok and everything seems normal although they have not had as much heavy rain up here.
Best part of arriving was speed of processing at immigration om arrival. Hope it /is as swift when I leave in ten days time. Great to e to come and enjoy all that Thailand has to offer. Weather not too hot, humidity seems low with lovely afternoon breezes. No crowds at MBK. JoyV
