Why do we have to pay to read news online!!

It's absurd that we have to sign up for an account with a fee to be able to read full new articles on the major news sites (Herald Sun, Courier Mail, The Age etc.).

And we have the large news sites (CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera etc) giving us free news. Is it getting out of hand here in Australia? Is this smart business or another money-sucking tactic.

I now exclusively check ABC's news site.

I didn't realise they were pointing a gun to your head demanding you to read their news article and pay for it. They're a business as far as I'm concerned.

BBC is far from free. It's just you don't pay for it being from oz. It's generously paid on your behalf by Brits by their TV licences. This is similar to ABC.

For a fairer comparison go try and read The Sun or The Times newspapers. You'll find the same restrictions.

    The Guardian Australia is free.

Well said. The Guardian Australia is the best news source in Australia as well.

Why anyone would pay to read the trash that's in the Herald Sun or the Daily Telegraph is beyond me.

Aren't people old enough to think for themselves?

Do you really need to consume the trash that Andrew Bolt and the other biased commentators in those papers spread?

The Guardian is very well known as biased, just in another direction. Commentary isn't news so if that isn't your bag, ignore it. Try being objective when you read/view these sites.

News reporting is becoming more of a sensationalist entertainment product, so if you are looking for factual news, ABC is probably as close as you are going to get to that because they don't live on sales/ratings like the other brands.

        • +1 for ABC. They are probably as 50/50 as you'll get which is why Abbott wants to kill them off.

Anything that is not a News Limited or right wing shock jock campaigning for them is on his hit list.

  • news.com.au is the parent site - you can read the same articles on here without restrictions - or, if it let's you read three articles for free, read three then clear your cache & cookies & read the next three.

There's also a Greasemonkey script you can install, called Newscorp paywall reset. Userscripts.org however has been shut down due to lack of maintainance, so I've uploaded the source code below.
      Here is the full script.

      You can also visit
      http://www.smh.com.au/text
      http://www.theage.com.au/text

No paywalls here, since it's all text. Also note that the paywall is triggered through your cookies, so everything is client side — you can use incognito mode, cache clearing, user scripts, etcetera to bypass these paywalls.

The only reliable online news source I've found so far is: http://www.theonion.com/

…the real stories the others are too afraid to report! :)

How is it absurd? When you read an article, do you realise that somebody wrote it and that person needs to be paid?

That's just common sense. Newspapers can't support themselves using subscriptions on papers any longer.

    No, you don't have to… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/115020

The easiest way I've found to read these news sites is to use Chrome and open the links in an Incognito window.

  • The main reason is that news sites are all loosing money, people are not buying news papers like they did in the past. So what this means are they are trying to make money in anyway possible. This is why all sites are moving for a pay wall option to bring in another revenue stream to assist with losses in other areas. Plenty of free sites out their still which means people will move to them.

  • heh waiting for someone to post that conspiracy/Corby website as the "truth"…

Just open your web browser as private and you can read all the news you want.

I laugh at the Australian which tries to make you pay for news that they copy from other free sites
