TPG - 80GB @ $49.99/month

61

Can someone pls confirm on this. See the link.
Currently, I, like others, are on $49.99 which gives 30GB peak, 25GB off peak.

Apparently this gives 40GB peak, 40GB off peak:

Consists of peak (8am-2:30am) and off peak (2:30am-8am) monthly usage quota. Speed will be shaped to 64k/64k for the period in which the monthly usage quota has been exceeded (peak and/or off peak). Monthly usage quota combines upload and download.

I tried to upgrade to it, but there is no option of upgrading to this particular plan.
Can someone who is more knowledgeable than myself see if upgrades are possible?

Even if not, it is a great deal for new customers

  • Looks like for that plan you'll have to start a new one, that is can't upgrade from existing one's unless you had a VOIP plan earlier

  • It'd be a safe bet to assume it's for new customers only.
I faced the same situation when I wanted to upgrade my TPG to Naked ADSL2+.

By memory it costs $59 to cancel from TPG…
$50 for 40 on/40 off seems pretty good.

Been with TPG since '07 and very pleased with the service.

  • Monthly usage quota combines upload and download.

    That's suck.

    • Does anyone use TPG for gaming?

I've only heard bad things about TPG.

      And counting uploads isn't cool.

      • I do, and my brother as well. Works very well. I think it depends on your location as well. Maybe we are lucky.

      • yeah me too… use it for counterstrike, get about 4-50ms… which is what everyone else on that server gets… gotten heaps better in the last few weeks, if it combines uploads and downloads i wont be switching.

i think the speed cap is also lowered from 128/128 (or was it 256?)

  • Even though it combines upload and download, its a great plan.

I'm very happy with TPG myself.

  • Yeh, this one includes upload AND download - bummer. Speed is shaped to 64/64kb after quota is reached. The previous VOIP plan throttled to 128/128kb. Good plan, though speed shaping has been reduced.

  • The INC2 and NAK2 plans are worth considering here:
    http://affinityvision.com.au/exetel/adsl2-plans.php

They both offer 100 local/national VoIP calls as part of the package and if you don't need a standard phone line, then you can save a little more with the Naked option.

You do need an Optus DSLAM at your exchange, but there is plenty of those now.

The PTL plans use other equipment at the exchange.

TPG's plans, apart from the Naked ones require you to pay line rental to Telstra (or some other provider)….

My own experience with TPG was very poor and you certainly hear much more than a fair share of complaints about TPG performance… only Dodo seems to have more complaints per user from what I've heard.

    • What do people get from signing up Exetel with your agent code? Do you offer cheaper modems/routers?

      • +1

Yes, I do offer discounts or rebates if the agent code is used. Right now I am offering $30 for ADSL1 churns/new connections and $65 for ADSL2 signups.

Also $30 for HSPA signups. But people will need to message me to keep me in the loop.

        • nvm. found it on your site. thx

          • @Blinda: Great, the links on the above referenced page should populate the agent code on the sign up form.

          • @Blinda: If you used "V007" as in "V" for Victoria and "007" an in James Bond… then I cannot see any new ones here yet.

        • Below is a reply email that I received outside of ozbargain. It has personal information removed, but answers critical information that was misunderstood.

          Hello,

I signed up for ADSL2 this month (my number is 039nnnnn80) and quoted
          the agent/referral code 039nnnnn72.

Okay, well if the referral used was not V007 and/or you used a customer number in the referral then I cannot get agent assignment and without agent assignment, I cannot pay the rebate.

The rebate is payable as indicated in my post for signups that use my agent code successfully. In such cases, I will be able to see limited customer information in my customer list — it is limited for privacy reasons, but it is enough to identify customers whom have signed up properly using my agent code.

The rebate is not from Exetel and Exetel does not provide me any financial information about my customers. I pay rebates to customers completely externally from Exetel and I require banking details [or other suitable means] to make the rebate payment.

Could you please ensure the $65 rebate is provided to 039nnnnn72 in
          their next bill, please?

This is not how it works, sorry if you have misunderstood. There is a clear process that must be followed and without following that correctly, it will not be possible to get a rebate.

          Kind Regards
          AndrewM

  • The BIG problem with TPG is their off-peak time and 5 1/2 hours during 2:30am-8am is prime example.

I liked the iPrimus $49.95 75GB Big Kahuna link found right here on OzBargain.
And exetel does look good if your on Optus lines and want cheap telephone line rental.

    • Yes, but you need not have the line rental if that is what you want.

It should be noted that Exetel has advised that their off peak period is reducing to 2am to midday, but that is still 10 hours.

Oh and Exetel do not count uploads on any plans, except of course HSPA which is completely different to "traditional" broadband options.

  • Oooh I saw a poster today at uni. and wondered about this. I Immediately thought ozbargain would know something about this.
Bummer about no upgrading. Well I'm wondering if those of you -out of contract period but stayed loyal- all collectively rang up and demanded upgrade allowance or threaten to leave soon, if that would have any effect ….
Answer: no. Well, I'm out of ideas. But fantastic find for the new ones!

  • Hi, I was with exetel since 2006 sep. from ADSL TO ADSL2+. I just wondering the speed. What should I get? It depends on lots of factors. My one is with OPTUS phone line through exetel (their package must use optus for this ADSL2+ ). I try one TPG ADSL2+ at Yagoona NSW from my netbook to download a TV show only take less than an hour. I try the same download at home West Pennant Hills NSW (Carlingford exchange) It show time to download is going to be more than 8 hours. I try the TPG and feel the speed differents as well. If I switch to TPG I need to use Telstra line . I just wondering what speed will be in my area (Carlingford exchange). I am paying $65 phone and internet at the moment. TPG will cost $80 phone plus internet. Any suggestion? Thanks

    • Speeds are dependent on many things, but the most significant is determined by your modem's ability to sync at a good rate — this is determined mostly by the downstream attenuation figure (which can give a rough indication of the distance your service is from the exchange). The longer your phone line (exchange to house), the higher the downstream attenuation and the lower the speed you can expect to sync at. The sync speed is generally fairly static for each location, but you cannot generalize on speeds for any particular area.

Other factors come into play as well. You may sync at a good rate, but any site that you visit may be slow for all sorts of reasons and it won't matter how fast your sync speed is. Other sites will almost always be as fast as your connection will handle.

So…. differing speeds at different locations is totally to be expected. Some people (really many people), cannot get anything better than ADSL1 speeds due to the line attenuation (distance / quality of line). Some still cannot even get ADSL1 service because of technology blockers that Telstra used to increase capacity on the "phone" network.. one of these technology blockers is "pair gain", which splits a single line into two lines so as to add another phone service without running another cable. Sometimes people on pair gain can get trans-positioned onto a non-pair gain line, but there is never any guarantees.

In history, Exetel has increased off-peak quota and the time period it applies quite considerably. Unfortunately, as mentioned in another post, they will be reducing the off-peak period from 12 hours to 10 hours per day as of the 1st of August, but the quota is unchanged. This has occurred because too many people set their auto downloaders to kick in at midnight, rather than later in the morning when it is much quieter. In any case, there will still be significant download quota and plenty of time to enjoy those downloads.

Exetel also realizes that not everyone needs or wants huge downloads and a bunch of extras, so they now also offer no frills options.

  • I hear people say that they have heard bad things about TPG but I've never heard any one with personal bad experience with them. Perhaps it's just reps from other companies spreading rumours ;)

I have been with them for a year now with no dramas at all. Im on the $49 25peak/25off peak plan in which uploads are not counted. Speed is great, service has been great when I needed it.

    • i had a few months where the speed went down to a crawl, but its back to normal now. (couldn't get above 50k on downloads, the IPTV wouldn't even work it was that slow). its gone up to max connection speed now (4-4.5k, im 4.5k from the exchange) and all seems to be normal again.

    • +3

      now you have one!

I'm overall satisfied w/ the speed TPG provided in my 06/07 experience. Their customer service, on the other hand, is absolutely shittyshit. I've ordered a cancellation three months prior to the day and they told me "oh ye, recorded, we'll cancel your service by then". Yeah, I thought, and went to overseas for a long holiday. Guess what? They didnt perform the cancellation, continued to charge me for nothing for four months and no email no phonecall no mail no nothing, I've only realized the fact when I finally took a look at my credit bill.

Not the worst part; not yet. After I made quite some calling to their so-called Customer Service/Support team (w/ waiting and transferring here and there) they told me that the "cancellation was canceled due to some sort of pending orders on your landline (which is operated by Telstra)", and they dont know - neither do I - what kind of these "pending orders" are. Because of that, "we were unable to terminate your contact and if you want, please fill the form again and we'll do so after next month", blah blah blah blah.

You name how greedy they are. Sequels are no better until some friend shed me a light; well, at least that's a handy tip for TPG customers:

When you deal w/ their crappy customer service, do not ask for their supervisor, do not wait for someone "I'll let you talk" / "I'll call you back", what you want to do is head to the whirlpool and make a post there threat (and prepare) to submit the case to TIO. Only then one of their reps will come out from nowhere, and such a rep's usually 500% more friendly & 1000% more helpful than their helpdesk fool. Present your problem/request there, not through the helpdesk.

Giving you a +1 for the term "shittyshit"

  • SAY NO to combined UPLOADS AND DOWNLOADS

  • i am with tpg and i really like it.
download speed quite inconsistent but average is quite good and the lowest limit is not too bad either.
i am 1.7km from the exchange.
before signing a contract i've read a lot about them.
my feel i that if you are within 2..2.5km zone from the exchange you gonna get a decent connection. if not it is a matter of luck.
i think you either love tpg or hate it.
for $80 i get 200GB, uploads not counted. personally i am VERY VERY happy. never had any issues with them at all.

  • hmmm i am very heavily considering churning to TPG.

I was looking at the $49.99 for 55GB downloads.

or should i get the VOIP deal for teh same price with 80GB.

I do not plan on using VOIP cause i have a limited idea of what it is and dont feel i need it.

    thanks

  • I've also been on TPG for about a year and a half now and totally satisfied. As someone else said, the speed and everything has been fine. Maybe not quite as fast as I expected but still sufficient. Customer service has also been fine when needed. No dramas, but I do realise that now I can probably get a cheaper deal elsewhere.. but that is only a pricing "issue" - if it can even be called one. Other than that it's been completely fine.

    Super Fast 80GB with VoIP:

Monthly usage quota combines upload and download

5Consists of peak (8am-2:30am) and off peak (2:30am-8am) monthly usage quota. Speed will be shaped to 64k/64k for the period in which the monthly usage quota has been exceeded (peak and/or off peak). Monthly usage quota combines upload and download.

stuff that, it was sounding good until then
boycott those dodgy "counting upload" plans before they become popular!

  • +1

    Just an update.

If you try and change plans to this now they've added the option but you can't choose it yet

    but it says

"Coming soon for existing tpg customer

Please note: We are currently working on the processing system for change of plan requests to provide the best and smoothest process possible. We are not able to process your change of plan request currently if you wish to change your plan to the new Super Fast ADSL2+ 80GB with VoIP plan."

So just a matter of time I guess?

    • The option to change to existing customers is now available…..I don't think I'm going to change though.

  • Yay cant wait. I just upgraded from $49.99/50gb to the 55gb one for free but this 80gb one is gunna be awesome for a free upgrade xD

  • Guys it says Monthly usage quota combines upload and download which is bad.
i would prefer to upgrade to Super Fast Standard /75GB (35GB+40GB)which DOES NOT INCLUDE UPLOADS.
the difference of these two plans aint much.
