None's the wiser at that age, get him the original and if he calls you up on it tell him to be more specific the next time he wants something.

Let's be honest. With form factor and design, you could easily fool a 12 year old into thinking that his parents forked out big money to give their son the latest next gen experience.
How long has it been since you were 12? How impressively unintelligent do you think the average 12yo is?

He has been mowing lawns and selling toys on ebay and pocket money works with big brother on weekends he has around $600 been saving for about 6 mths, so he knows he wants the xbox one and I am trying to help him get a good deal. sorry I put xbox 1 and not xbox one, did not realise there would be confusion, thanks
Everyone's been making the "DO YOU MEAN XBONE OR THE FIRST XBOX?" joke since its announcement, so you basically just gave everyone a big, enticing reason to make the joke lol.
To be serious, I would wait (I realize this may not be a possibility) until the Bone gets its first big exclusive (Halo 5, Gears Of War (Not sure if confirmed) and maybe Microsoft could broker a deal to get a Splinter Cell or something I dunno, ) then the console will quite possibly be bundled with it on the cheap, as it has been with Watch_Dogs and Wolfenstein recently.
I would advise to make sure you don't get the kinect, that way it's 100 bucks cheaper and no decent games are likely to come out for it.
No need to wait, unlike the PSdone4 the Xbox1 actually has good games to play now like Forza5, PvZ:Garden Warfare, Titanfall and Dead Rising 3.

Ill say try Gumtree. I've seen some people selling it because they had been given one and already has one or an unwanted present. I've seen some for $400 brand new. If you do however buy it off Gumtree, be sure to meet at their house so if there's something goes wrong, then you know where they're at

Don't bother with a kinnect unless he realllly wants to be able to turn it on by saying Xbox on. Although the four game thing isn't that bad with the kinnect from jb. Remember eb has a sale on.
Good on him for saving up enough to buy an Xbox, not a easy task at that age. Hope you can find a good deal for him. Good on you for teaching him to save up for things he wants and not just buying it for him. Some good lessons there
