Bug problem from old fridge

Hi guys,

Last week I got a free used fridge for my new rental unit. After two days, all sorts of bugs (small cockroach like etc) started to appear. The source seem to be the fridge. I have used copious amount of Mortin Fast spray from kmart (6.5$) and the initial result was good but every now and then they appear by one or two. I've completely sealed off my kitchen room for now but I feel hopeless. Please suggest how to get rid of this problem fast.

Check the drip tray under the fridge. You might have a cockroach hatchery inside of the fridge itself too.

They might also not just live in the fridge, also check appliances like toasters (the crumb tray should be emptied out), the microwave oven (if there are food stains in the oven, clean it) and any other places where it might be warm and humid.

Wipe down benchtops (no small puddles of water lying around), make sure the sinks are clean, open up your draws after cleaning so they dry out properly. Apply Rentokill gel to nooks and crannies, wherever you think the cockies might hide. Keep this up for a week or two and you should see results.

Don't spend any money on the Mortein bombs either (if you happen to have German cockroaches, don't work so well against them, and they don't affect eggs either), call the exterminators (fee around $150) and they'll do a proper job.

And if the exterminators don't work, nuke em' from orbit.

it's the only way to be sure.

  • The fridge is full of German cockies. I would chuck it personally. If you decide to keep it get some more aerosol, cheap stuff preferably. Plus get one can with a nozzle. You can pull the nozzle off the expensive one and put it on the cheap cans. Lay the fridge on its side and blast as much as you can up into the innards of the machine. Try to stay away from the wiring and motor, plus check the wheels and the plastic caps on top of the door hinges. They also get in the door seals, so check them. When they start to exit make sure you squash any adults with egg cases on their bums. Like this. http://r.b5z.net/i/u/10116186/i/female_cockroach_eggcase.jpg

    • I ditched the fridge last night, got a new one. Now I don't see that many cockroaches crawling in the kitchen. That fridge was the nest!

Any suggestion what I should do next?

  • Put a few sticky traps out to catch any stragglers. These ones are the best. http://www.pestys.com.au/images/watermarked/detailed/0/87_Us…

    • I have heard that roach baits with works better as they carry the poison with them to the nest and subsequently killing the newborns too. The trap will not destroy the nest, only the ones come into contact.

      Any advice on that?

      • The german cockroaches dont seem to have nests they lay eggs everywhere :( I dont know
But I know they are very hard to get rid of, especially when the supermarket next door to me wont get a pest controller in and get rid of them properly :/

      • You got rid of the fridge so there should only be a few hanging around. The traps will get them. I wouldn't waste money on baits if I was in your situation. Not necessary.
