Best price for genuine Lumix battery please? Or maybe a better camera buy?

Long story short, my aunt asked for compact camera recommendations, and among those that I suggested was the Panasonic Lumix tz40, which was in the price range of what she was wanting to spend.

So she gets on the phone last night and says, "That camera you suggested, did you know the battery is $70?" She doesn't want to know about non genuine batteries, because she believes the blurb about them damaging the camera etc etc.

So, does anyone know of a really good price for the genuine spare battery please?

Alternately, what about a GOOD camera with similar specs that takes rechargeable AA's? She wants something that will perform well in low light, and tends to take a lot of landscapes and close-up shots.

I don't know about Lumix cameras but buy a Sony Camera with a micro-USB port, then buy one of those external USB batteries you always find on Ozbargain, and charge the camera with that. No need for 'spare' batteries.

  • How about swapping out the aunt?

Provided you go for a reasonable replacement battery from someone who's going to stay around, there is relatively little chance of any problems - if for no other reason than the supplier doesn't want the hassle. Batteries are fairly simple devices, well within the scope of successful copying.

It looks like the usual price for that battery is ~$15 - which to my eye is still expensive for what it is.

Oh, and if it did somehow damage the camera, just get it repaired under warranty, they couldn't know.
