Lenovo ThinkPad X230T or ThinkPad Edge E431?

I am thinking of buying either the X230T or E431 I am not sure which one is better. I will mainly use it for uni and may be some light gaming (Not sure if these can withstand the Sims 4). Thanks in advance.

For X230T ($800)
Intel Core i5-3320M Processor( 2.60GHz 3MB)
12.5" HD Multitouch 1366x768
8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz
Intel Integrated HD Graphics 4000
Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN 300Mbps)
128GB SSD

For E431 ($700)
Intel Core i5-3230M Processor (3MB Cache, up to 3.20GHz)
14W HD Antiglare, Midnight Black
Intel Integrated HD Graphics 4000
4GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600MHz SODIMM
500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm

  • Go for the 14" one, you will struggle to perform you daily tasks on the 12.5" screen.

    • Or buy a external LCD monitor for home use.

IMO for uni you'd want a lot of portability… and long battery life. Since the two laptops lack a discrete GPU, neither of these machines will perform well for gaming (but the Sims series are casual games and frame rates don't matter, any basic Intel HD 4000 graphics should be enough).

If you want to buy the E431, I would definitely go for the i7 and Discrete 740m GPU option. It makes it pretty pricey though at $899.10

  • Between the two most definitely X230T. 12.5" is big enough for the resolution (1366x768) and I have a few friends using the same 12.5" IPS panel as daily driver. X230T also comes with DisplayPort (vs HDMI on E431) which gives you more options with external monitors. Marginally better build quality as well.

    • Definitely agree - the X230T is much better value for your usage. The X230T also comes with the same tough durabilities and the premium build qualities of the T series, whereas the E series is just an entry level business laptop. For $800, it's an absolute bargain - I remember selling these for $1800+ not so long ago.

  • I think overall, the surface 3 will be better for you (uni requires portability). Just a slightly smaller panel compared to the x230T.
However it will cost an extra $250 and release in august though. (i think the student 10% off should come by then).

  • EA is claiming Sims 4 will even better on low end PCs than Sims 3, so both should be fine. But honestly once you have tried an SSD you never want to go back. I'd be going for the smaller lighter one, with a nice big LCD at home.

  • Thanks a lot for the useful tips guys. I decided to go with the X230T.
