Receive a FREE Copy of Disney Pixar's RenderMan Software via Registration (Valued at $495)

1610

If you're an aspiring animator, this may just be the best news you'll hear this month. Disney Pixar is giving away (that's right - giving away) a non-commercial version of RenderMan, its in-house animation software. Free. Gratis. No catch. You'll be able to download the program some time in August.

Disney Pixar has used RenderMan, which costs $495 (commercial use), to render some of its best-known animated features like Wall-E and Toy Story, so this is a really, really big deal.

Simply fill out the registration form, download the program when it's available in a few months, and start creating your very own Toy Story 4.

Here is the official FAQ from the RenderMan website.

Where sbouts does it say the software is free? I cant find… I see it is free registration

    • +1

Just above the registration form: "Register for Free Non-Commercial RenderMan".

    • +2

Not available yet. The registration is so you get notified when it is released, and perhaps to secure yourself a free copy, it's not very clear.

    • +6

You do not need to register to get it for free - this is only to register to be notified of its release.

RenderMan will be free for non commercial use: http://renderman.pixar.com/view/non-commercial

No need to register. IE, It's not a deal - don't bother registering.

    Thanks mate love ur work.

  • This is interesting.
If the program isn't available yet, does that mean it's new?
Or is it Pixar's inhouse program that's getting a public version?

    • +3

It's just some fan fair around it being made free for non commercial use:

      Free Non-Commercial Use
With the upcoming release, RenderMan will be free for non-commercial usage.
Examples of non-commercial use-cases include evaluations, personal learning,
experimentation, research, and the development of tools and plug-ins for RenderMan.
For more information refer to our EULA.

      So, no need to register.

It's a commercial render engine that they are making available for free for non commercial use, much like autodesks education software. Keep in mind this is not animation software, this is a rendering engine.

    • +1

So I won't be able to create Toy Story 4 with this?

      • +1

You could render it, after you created it. But then get no money for it :-) RenderMan is useless to most people. If you are looking for doing the whole modelling to render process look at something like Blender.

    Thank u thank u

    Thanks TA :-)

People vote on the name alone. There is no way even 89 people browsing this site know what the software even does…

    • +5

      yeah, it predicts lottery numbers.

    • -2

People don't care about what it does. As long as it is free, it is a bargain and shall be gobbled up.

    • -1

Free… good! Not free… not good!

  • -2

It's like maya or 3d max.

    • +3

No, it's not. It's a renderer that you use inside thos applications. It is effectively a way to output your 3D scene into its final 2D rendered frames. If you don't have 3D software and a knowledge of how to use it, Renderman won't be doing much for you.

Also keep in mind that Renderman is NOT the same as Renderman Studio which acts more like a user-friendly plugin for Maya, like VRay or Mental Ray (ie, it has palettes, toggles, input boxes etc). Renderman full is a beast and requires extensive programming knowledge.

  • Boy Vegemite is an uptight little man. Keep up the good work tightarse.

  • Anyone know recommended hardware for this? I am assuming it would be resource hungry.

    • +1

More everything. For rendering, processor and RAM, as much as you can throw at it. Minimum 8gigs I would say, but it depends on the complexity of your 3D scene and shaders after that.

    Site Says:

RenderMan can be plugged into one of the following tools, Maya, Houdini, Katana, or Cinema4D. If you use one of those packages you can try RenderMan.

Unless you own and know how to use Maya, Houdini, Katana, or Cinema4D then this will be useless to you. It's really niche stuff.

I'll list some better options for the hobbyist in a few days time when I get a chance.

    • Or Blender. Don't forget the Open Source!
(blender.org) But I agree - This program is like a really good stain and varnish for after you've built the bookshelf. It's not the hammer, nails, sandpaper or timber. You still need the tools and skill to get it that far, but this gives it the final polish.
      So Much Analogy?

  • any update ? have they started sending it out ??
