Advice please: can I post free used furniture here my mum is giving away?

Hi, my mum is moving to retirement home, so has some big furniture items she cant take with her. She doesnt want them thrown out with council collection, would rather they go to someone needy. She is in western suburbs, melbourne.

So can I post a list here and then whoever is interested can pm me and make arrangements to pick up

havent seen similar posts here so thought i would ask first

TIA

if you live on a reasonably busy street then take them out to the pavement and put a "free" sign on it. they'll go. I got rid of a pile of stuff doing doing that.

Just be careful doing that - well, actually I'm not sure about Melbourne, but it's not legal to do that in Brisbane outside of kerbside collection dates.
If you happen to get a grumpy council worker come past and see it, they can fine you.

        • good thing I'm in Redcliffe.

Call the Salvos 13SALVOS (13 72 58), they'll bring the truck to you and take everything, except electrical items.

were calling them to take clothes. have always used salvos bfore myself but last time they they said dont take furniture unles its in "as new" condition, so ended up on hard waste collection. it goes in their salvos shop and they cant sell it. but thanks anyway.

      • Maybe try Vinnies too. I believe they take electrical items too (but ring first of course to ensure that your store does) as I understand they check all these before possible sale. A lot of the furniture at these stores is slow to move so I can understand them not taking on more. Would it be worthwhile to check if the Red Cross may be interested too? An ad on the noticeboard of the local TAFE and/or uni may work well also.

The leaving out on the nature strip idea usually works well (although apparently it is illegal for people to take items from there … I know a Council that took someone to Court over that … and won), but ensure the furniture does not get rained on. A neighbour had trimmed back an old oak tree and was concerned about the logs. I suggested he cut them into small enough pieces that someone would take them, and yes, they were taken overnight.

  • @thebest63 — you can list them in the Classified however you cannot post them as deals. Alternatively you should probably post them on Gumtree.

will post here as per @varunsic suggestion, and on noticeboard at local shopping centre and see how it goes. whatever is left can go in council collection. thanks all for the suggestions.

  • just put out on the foot path and i'm sure they will disappear

A few yrs ago in Melbourne I put some items (desk, hutch, set of draws) in reasonable condition on the nature-strip out front with signage saying "free". Next morning they were all still there, left another night and again no takers. 3rd night i changed sign to "$10 each" and sure thing they were all gone next day. Funniest thing ever! This was mid week not weekend.
