Optus - new $60 unlimited call plans with 5GB of data from June 10 - no lock in

"Under the new plans, $60 per month will give a user unlimited calls and texts and 5GB of data to download each month. The new plans also include automatic data top-ups, priced at $10, which adds 1GB of mobile data to a user’s account whenever they reach the limit of their existing quota. A similarly priced plan at Telstra for $70 a month would come with only 1.5GB of data to download. Customers at Telstra can buy an additional 1GB of data for $15 per month."

The real game changer for me is the once-off $5 charge to add a data-only device (eg tablet, pocket hotspot) to the plan. I've held off on 3G for my tablet for so long because I couldn't justify the monthly cost when I could just tether off my phone. This changes everything.

Incidentally, how does Optus fare in the ACT? I was a customer many years ago in Victoria and service was acceptable but not nearly as good in rural areas as Telstra.

    • Update. I'm on a Nexus 5 in Canberra. Optus 4G in the ACT is 2300mhZ only for a range of reasons, which isn't supported by my phone. It means I'd be back on 3G. Oh well, guess I'll stick with my grandfathered Telstra plan.

  • Amaysim Unlimited, which uses the Optus network is still better value for money.

      No 4G though.
It does make a difference for people in 4G areas, cause Optus 3G is crap for using the internet.
