  • No PS4 with this deal though

    • +20

The PS4 deals are ripoffs, what's the point in buying a way overpriced tv for a $450 console? Buy a better, cheaper tv and a PS4 instead.

      • +3

I agree with you bro. Just making people aware of the fact.

      • +5

        or build a gaming PC

      • What brand/s would you suggest?

      • you sell it on ebay.

        • -8

If your after that exact Sony tv then fair enough but Sony tv's are generally priced higher than their equivalent counterparts because of their 'superior' branding (that existed 20 years ago).

        • +4

Please don't listen to misinformed 'experts' on ozbargain. A quick google search on a very well known and unbiased TV review site is a much better place to start.

          http://www.flatpanelshd.com/focus.php?subaction=showfull&id=…

That is the recommended list of TV's section, a quick scan down will show that Sony and Samsung are clear leaders in the LED LCD space with Panasonic doing well in the final plasmas they produce.
Generally speaking, LG only had one panel in the list and from all reports that's not surprising.

        • "buzzing" is a bit of a worry.

I would probably notice it - like the high-pitched noise I sometimes hear on News 24.

  • +24

New Technology and already reburbs, interesting.

    • this is the older model

      • +1

Still, you'd expect it to last at least 2 years without issues.

      • -1

        Deleted

  • What kind of connection would I need for this? I presume the Displayport-out on my laptop couldn't give me full res at 60fps? My video card probably doesn't even support it.

I'm really wary of buying this sort of first-generation technology.

    • +2

The TV supports HDMI 2.0 for 4K @ 60Hz as of the Dec firmware update.

      • +1

I know that put some minds at ease , but considering vast majority of content is still only 720/1080 it would need one hell of an upscaler to look some-what acceptable. I left the AV sales market half way through the KD55X9004A's market life and I can tell you the onboard up-scaler is not great at all , I find the AV receivers are definitely an improvement……. but youll really need to process a raw source being fed at this point in time.

        • +2

I don't agree. I owned this TV and I can tell you this tv upscaler is among the best of market (or even the best). 1080p looks better on this TV than my older flagship Sony XBR4 1080p TV.

Having said that, I won't buy a refurbished tv from graysonline. I bought a bluray player from them and I was not impressed by its 'refurbished' condition - full of scratches.

The magnetic speakers which comes with this TV is easily scratchable even when wiping with dry towels.

        • +3

Spot on. I have extensively played with upscaling SD and HD content to FHD using the HQV Vida chip, which was the bees knees only a couple of years ago. I ended up turning off upscaling alltogether.

Marketing folk love upscaling as it looks great on a spec sheet. In reality though, it simply doesn't work as all it does is attempts to create a great amount of detail that was never their in the first place. Upscaling to 4K will look even worse than upscaling to FHD.

        • Not to mention this is a preliminary attempt at 4K upscaling.

  • +10

You do realise there isn't actually content for this resolution?

    TV? Nope
    Movies? Nope
    Xbox/PS4/Wiiiii? Nope

    It's just a glorified monitor.

    • Some movies yes, saw a few being remastered for 4K viewing.

      • +9

The blu-rays with "mastered in 4K" on them are actually still 1080p. They just have a higher bitrate.

        • +5

The next they will sell a VHS remastered into DVD, then remastered into Blu-Ray and then remastered into 4K

        • +2

          lol, that's funny. :)

    • +3

My digital camera and gopro says you are wrong

      • +7

Now that is definitely stuff you need to see in 4K lol.

        • +4

actually 20 megapixel photos would look better
and gopro is 4k 15fps but new gopro will be 30fps

i advise people NOT to buy 4k until it has new displayport for amd freesync
and also has a new hdmi 120hz 3d at 4k as a standard

    • +1

      PC games? YES!!!

      • …as long as you have a GPU worth more than $500 or don't mind lowering settings (until it looks worse than max settings at 1080p).

Still, first time I've seen one that can at least do 4k at 60hz (not 30). Does the GPU need to have HDMI 2.0 for that, though?

        • +4

You can't game at 4K on this from my understanding. Simply because it doesn't have a Display Port. (No current GPU supports HDMI 2.0).

…as far I as know anyway. Happy to be proven wrong.

But as above, bit of a worry that there is 'stock' of refurbished units. How many broke down since release?

        • +2

You can't really game at 4K resolutions, period.

You need Quad-SLI Titans at a minimum to be able to push 60FPS in a majority of Triple-A games at 3840×2160, and even then, the framerate is just barely breaking the 60FPS barrier (the minimum framerate still dips into Powerpoint levels when SHTF on screen).

Games like Metro: Last Light, TWR:2, or Company of Heroes 2 will make a R9 295X2 come to a screeching halt at 4K.

Not to mention a majority of games do not support those resolutions and even if by some miracle they run, they'll scale terribly (stretching, illegible font, FOV issues, crashes, graphical artifacting, visual tearing, etc.)

People also hopelessly overestimate their visual acuity and don't grasp the relationship between pixel pitch and distance.

You need to sit a good way back from a 4K screen to actually be able to see the difference in resolution. And that totally defeats the point of a gaming PC, doesn't it?

    • +1

Monitors are not 'smart' :P .

    • +2

Chicken and the egg! 4k content won't be mainstream until the monitors/TVs are mainstream, and vice versa.

You should be encouraging others to buy this, so that you can purchase in 6 months time with plenty of content and much cheaper tv prices!

      • If there's one thing the gatekeepers in charge of what content we get in Australia (and how) have proven over and over again, it's that they don't care what content we are ready for, or want, or demand (even if failing to meet that demand loses them millions).

My money is on us getting 4K content as soon as it becomes clear to out-of-touch, greedy, narcissistic luddites that they can make a buck out of it (by somehow charging triple whatever it costs in the US)…

  • +2

Wonder what was wrong with them that they needed refurbishing, not like they are years old yet. Maybe DOA's that just needed minor repairs or something…

    Also worth noting

3 Months Sony Service Centre Warranty

  • +4

Such an ugly TV. I've seen this in person and it looks like somebody ripped off the speaker grills.

    • -1

Because speaker grills make things look better.

  • +4

Seems like a great deal, although

    a) Apart from some overcompressed YouTube videos there really isn't any 4K content available on Australia (AFAIK Sony haven't even updated the Netflix app for 4K)

    b) 3 months warranty?? …you really need to get that extended warranty and/or be prepared to fight for your Australian Consumer Law rights…

    • Just checked the extended warranty and it gives you 1 year only for $170.16

      • +2

Don't bother with the Ext. Warranty , in reality this TV's had a fault in the first year (some not even so , they were just returned) , and should be repaired/restored to functional standards which are supposed to meet Consumer Laws. Just hang on to the Receipt.

      • +2

Hahaha are you serious? Absolute robbery considering statutory rights are free and will get you longer than a year.

        • +2

You covered for refurbs? 3 months sounds like Sony has a lot of confidence in their quality!

        • It's not about confidence, it's the cost underwrite it all.

They basically have to pay for insurance to cover the repair in case they go bust while the product is under warranty. 3 months is cheaper than 3 years and the line item won't stay on their budget more than one fiscal quarter.

  • +1

Good Price…. but like mentioned above ahead of its time for us in Australia with hardly any content available to watch in 4k..

You guys should give this thread a read about Gray's Online refurb TVs before considering the purchase:

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1734285

    Here's an excerpt:

"Hiya, I used to work for GraysOnline.

I have extensive experience with their refurbished TV's and other electronic goods.

    Do Not Buy them.

They are not owned or managed by the manufacturer, rather by a refurbishing company where GraysOnline facilitate the sale and warranty process.

Their return and warranty process is a pain, time consuming and without fail TV's tend to break just outside the warranty period."

    • +2

Bought a TV from Grays before and had nothing but headaches with their customer service. I will never ever buy anything from them again and warn anyone who will listen to avoid Grays.

  • +3

Bought a refurbished TV from graysonline once and trust me its a pain. First TV came which was broken (still had to pay shipping), second one came after a month and worked for about 1 year and then the led panel screwed up so I called grays up for warranty and they took their time and ended up telling me that my TV is outside the warranty period.

    • I bought a refurb sony AV receiver from grays online recently.

I haven't had an issue at all………………………… yet.

    • +1

If everyone was buying TV's that often , they sell the house and live in a TV too .You should've schooled the customer service advisers about consumer law.

      • To be honest at that time I didnt know much about the consumer law. I wish this happened recently i would have definitely schooled them.

    • and that is why I only buy expensive refurb TV's from graysoutlet and not graysonline.

      • To clarify, the OUTLET is covered by consumer laws, same as any retailer.

The AUCTION sales are basically sold as-is. Buyer beware.

  • +2

Personal experience id stay away from graysonline refurbs. No matter how good a deal looks, just too painful!..

  • +2

father in law bought a refurb tv from grays… turned up with completely cracked glass all the way across the front of the display… then took months to sort out… pretty sure he ended up getting a refund

  • +1

Not a great deal, let me tell you why..

only 3 months warranty + ugly tv + theres only a handful of movies on the market now that are 4k..

first nbn then 4k tv later..

    • agree + agree + agree …
but some will still buy because they can then brag about having the latest gadget!
      ps - me included.
pss - if I had a spare few thousand lying around that is!

    • +1

      4k porn could sell this.

      • if only they could make Some parts 4K

        • +1

          that's what she said

  • +6

Read this article this morning. Wasn't aware of this fact.

"if you buy a 4K movie from Sony, you’ll need a Sony television to play it back. If you buy one from Samsung, you’ll need a Samsung TV to view it"

Just something to keep in mind.

    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/06/4k-is-officially-the-next-…

    • +6

      W

      T

      F

    • thats bs.

    • +1

This all has to do with Sony and Samsung media boxes, there's a simple way around it and that by not buying these stupid boxes that only work with certain tv's and lock you in to paying top dollar.

Instead stream through a service like Netflix which is offering more and more 4k content over time.

The article is akin to those that knocked iTunes because you can't put the songs in your disc man.

    • Nothing like screwing the consumer.

Although to be fair most of us would probably have already had a media player(WD Live,Roku etc) setup to bypass such restrictions.

  • +1

Wouldn't standard consumer protection cover you against faults that occurred outside the 3 month warranty?

    • +4

Wouldn't standard consumer protection cover you against faults that occurred outside the 3 month warranty?

Maybe not - because you are buying a "known faulty" product. It might just get classed a "second hand"… I dunno.

But I sure as hell would never buy anything from Grays Online. Stuff that for a joke!

    • +1

Interesting question. Did a bit of research because i was interested also.

From what I can tell the same consumer guarantee still applies. But the estimated length of time you'd be covered isn't so long for a cheaper version of the same TV. i.e. Pay 5k for a TV and it would be expected to last a lot longer than a similar TV if you'd paid $1k.

      IANAL!

  • There must have been a lot of warranty faulty returns if they're already selling refurbs. Maybe that's not a good sign.

By the way this refurb TV only has 3 months Sony Service Centre warranty. Another not a good sign. So after 3 months later you're on your own unless you buy the extended warranty. Just going by what it says. But obviously Sony doesn't have much faith in their refurbs if there's only a standard 3 month warranty.

    Warranty:
3 Months Sony Service Centre Warranty (Managed by GraysOnline) Extended Warranty Available For Purchase

    • Whoops, reply not for you.

  • Grays just isn't a good business name to be selling stuff. The word Grey is synonymous with dodgy or half baked. Hence the phrase 'Grey imports'. Spelling shift really doesn't matter.

    • +2

Gray Online is also an auction warehouse - I think they also sell through oo.com.au - anyway .. does spending $1,800 for a refurb "anything" with a 3 month warranty make ANY SENSE!!!!

      • rather buy a TCL for $1,200 with 3 years warranty.. its a no brainer to buy this!!

    • +1

nothing wrong with grey imports, its actually just another name people have used instead of parallel importing

  • I've got an old 68 cm Sony trinatron TV that's 17 years old and still looks great, just sayin…

    • +2

      Yeah, whatever you say.

    • +1

Yeah if you're only playing SD content.

    • +2

yeah if you got 80 y.o. eyes.

    • Mate you could get like $4 for that on eBay

  • +1

I almost bought one especially with the 15% discount at Dick Smith over the weekend. My other half pulled me back to reality and we settled on a normal full hd tv instead. Agree with everyone that once content becomes affordable and 4k being mainstream it would become the norm to have one.

  • +1

Would this be a good TV to watch AFL on channel 7?

    • The AFL doesn't broadcast in 4k. So whilst I'm sure it is a fine TV for sport, you would be better off buying a 1080p TV, for a lot less, and get the same result.

  • -1

What about content? Can the endoscope Aldi was selling record in 4k?

  • -1

As a matter of fact 4k is a big wank because
    1. You'd need a bigger than 55" screen to appreciate it
    2. There's no content
    3. High res tablets are where it's at for media consumption.

  • I had a chance to watch a couple of Bluray movies on this very same TV. It delivers a much better picture compare with my Panasonic ET60 (full HD).

I agree there is a lack of content at the moment but if you can afford the price then why not. Definitely the upscale algorithm works and you have something ready for the future.

BUT I WONT BUY A REFURBISHED TV FROM GRAY. Too much trouble. I bought a cross trainer from them once and it failed on the second day after delivery. Took me ages to get it replaced.
