Coles Gift Cards - Entertainment Book

I am kicking myself a bit here but after advice as well.

I buy the Entertainment Book every year SOLELY for the Coles Gift Cards. I don't live in a capital or regional city that has a book so everything else in there is useless to me. Anyway, my ING 5% Paywave rebate ran out TODAY so I went to order some Coles gift cards through the Entertainment Book. It turns out though that not only did my Entertainment Book end today (GRRRRRR, I thought it was financial year) but Coles as of today are no longer a partner and no longer offer Entertainment Book customers the 5% off!!

I am a Coles shopper from way back. I practically fly the flag for them but it's half mast at the moment and unless I can find someone else offering them at 5% off, we start shopping at Woolies as of tomorrow.

Can anyone let me know if anyone else is doing it. Thanks. I am kicking myself.

  • Bugger, I'm not a member of a union which you need to register.

    • 1 % surcharge for CC cards too.

  • Shop at Woolies, better product range and pricing anyway.

No complaints about entertainment book here from the loss of Coles. :-)

    • Excludes gift card?

      • was implying to buy groceries in $100 ($95) chunks, not gift cards.

  • I just logged onto 'Advantage online' with Lumo energy, my gas supplier and they have a note:
"IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT COLES GIFT CARDS

We have been advised by Coles that the Coles Gift Card and Coles Group & Myer Gift Cards can no longer be purchased as part of the Lumo Advantage Online program.

The sale of Coles Group & Myer Gift Cards will cease with immediate effect while the sale of the Coles Gift Card will end on Saturday 31st May 2014.".

Looks like Coles may have decided to stop the sale of gift cards available for 5% off across the board.

Even with RACV you can get 5% off for Woolworths cards but not Coles - but this has been the case for a while.

  • just purchased Coles Gift Cards @ 5% off via http://aus.rewardgateway.com/ (my employer's version of it)
    :)

  • When I heard a few months ago that Coles weren't in the new Entertainment book I figured they were getting out of the 5% off market bit by bit.

I guess they can't afford to do the discounted gift cards and the flybuys/coles voucher promotions together.

  • DAMN IT!!! I normally keep about $500 in coles gift cards, but I ran out awhile ago and have been meaning to buy more. Now I find that yesterday they stopped doing it. Procrastination you bitch.

Same with me outlander. I actually spent $60 on a new Entertainment Book just for them so I had a full $4000 worth left. I would going to buy them in one hit this month thinking the Entertainment Book went until the end of this month. So mad.

  • Lyoness (which is a dodgy MLM but it's free to join and you don't have to do the whole MLM element) offers Coles gift cards with a 2% cashback.

Not quite the same thing, but it's something.

  • I too am looking for 5% off Coles Gift Cards now.

  • Ahhhh. My wife fortunately spotted it and we bought about $2000 worth a few months back. Thinking we should have bought more now.

    • where did it say?

  • I managed to scrape in and get a few last cards before 5pm on 1/6 but also looking for an alternative source. I much prefer Woolies Wish gift cards given how many places they can be used, but unfortunately the supermarkets along my train route between work/home are all Coles so that's where I tend to do the bulk of my "quick shops".

  • Not that it helps now, but someone flagged this about a month ago - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/143319

My only other suggestion would be if you haven't had ME Bank 5% cash back deal, you could give that a whirl. Sign up by 31st of August. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/135350

Also, if you've got money in a savings account elsewhere (Ubank at 4.01% or 4.37% with Ultra) , their online savings at 4.6% for first 5 months is prob best atm. Signup for that by 4th July.

Yes. I raised this back a month ago, but it did not get much traction in OzBargain back then.
I suppose not many realised that a good thing was coming to an end.
All other alternatives to get 5% discounted Coles Cards are not as good because they charge postage or a credit card fee or both.
Hopefully Coles will lose a lot of business for this and reconsider for next year's Entertainment Book.
Which brings me to another question: is the Entertainment Book still good value?

  • This gets you a similar service and is a bit cheaper than the book.

    http://nationalseniors.com.au/be-member/eligibility-and-fees

  • I joined API membership this year and they still have coles 5% deal. $110 per annual.

    • so you need to spend $2200 to start saving a dollar. Surely not worth it.

  • Some trade unions, and Private insurance/Health care providers still offer 5% off Coles gift cards to members.

  • Doesn't seem like there is a cost effective method for coles gift cards yet, a lot of people are going to move over to woolworths, bad move coles!

  • You are right. I was not able to find a suitable replacement to the Entertainment book 5% discount gift cards deal.
I have the ING Orange 5% discount for now, but once that is finished in a few months will switch to Woolworth for groceries and Caltex for petrol.
Hopefully Coles will reconsider and get back in the Entertainment book, although once people switch they may not go back.

    • "will switch to Woolworth for groceries and Caltex for petrol."

It's not as if you could use Coles/Coles Myer gift cards at Shell. I gotta admit the Woolies ecosystem is so much better. Only problem is that there are only Coles / Shells in the places I frequent!!!

Everything about Coles seems inferior: their Flybuys rewards program, their limited gift cards, the removal of discounts. My parents swear that their prices are cheaper, though this hasn't been my experience.

I really wish I could just switch over to Woolies entirely.

  • I mentioned this in some other thread, but seeing as this one's been updated - Ambassador Card owners still seem to be able to get their cards at a discount, albeit you have to pay postage.

    • But the $5 for registered post makes it not really viable unless you buy $500 of gift cards at a time
