  • TP link w8980 $99 at MSY is a standard recommendation.
Check out Whirlpool forums though.. they will have more specific recommendations based on your line length and ISP.

  • my advice is just spend the money on ~$50 modem and router.

    TP-LINK TD-W8960N $45

  • I like the ASUS DSL-N55U $129 from MSY

You have many options in this price range. I would recommend looking at OzCableguy Web, they have excellent, well organized pages with consistent description of all modem routers with comments and ratings: http://shop.ozcableguy.com/item.asp?CAT=Routers+-+Wireless

Another good Aus site is Warcom: http://www.warcom.com.au/shop/browse/adsl-modem-router/
I would also recommend reading a few reviews before deciding to buy anything, it is not uncommon for a poor modem to be recommended by people who just happen to be lucky. And of course excellent place is Whirlpool Modems/Routers forum: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/82

In this price range I would probably go with DrayTek Vigor 2710ne Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router ($105), unless you need the latest wireless 802.11ac standard or Gigabit LAN ports, or some other specific future which around $100 model is likely to be missing.

  • i recently bought a $159 Dlink modem, but now starting to think whether i should've just went for a cheaper modem. Because seriously, all this fast speed AC so and so on the wireless connections ,etc just feels like a gimmick and I'm starting to wonder if i just bought a cheap $50 modem it may have just done the same job anyways. If it turns out so, then I would feel so ripped off right now.

    • Well it's a DLink… so you're off to a bad start.

Wireless AC needs AC compatible equipment (Laptop/Phone) which are rare. Might get better WiFi Range due to Vectoring though.
AC also means you got Dual Band WiFi which is a definite advantage over the $50 modems which only have 2.4GHz.
It might have a bigger NAT table (but being a DLink, it also might not)
Apart from that, there's only a couple of Modem Chipsets, the right one will improve/maximise your connection speed and stability, but the recommendation depends on your ISP and line length.

  • I'm moving soon, away from the Sydney area to country VIC where dashing in to the city to RMA a bad modem/router is no longer possible. I might buy one of these TLINK's as a backup, since I have bad luck with my modems and something generally goes wrong with them every 12-18 months.

    I love my Netgear DGND3700.

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/netgear-dgnd3…

It has a lot of goodness for the $$$ & has been on various sales for far less than the $169 OW is asking. Ebay has plenty. Look for V2.0.

Sends a signal that reaches from opposite end of my very solid brick house, front of property—> to the rear of the property granny-flat (this is a very deep, double-lot, mind you). From there, I pick the signal up with an old router flashed to DD-WRT firmware creating a wireless bridge w/physical ports ;)

Also has 2 USB ports for plugging a regular HDD to for file sharing (or 'net access) & is dual-band.

    Imho.

    Cheers

  • I've been using Billion 7800N for a few years now and I'm keen to recommend the same to a friend. However this has been superceded by the 7800NXL. There seems to be good reviews on this new model, however there are also numerous complains on Whirlpool. Any suggestions?

  • Whats a good modem router with Gigbite and AC?
