I'm using XP and we all know that has been discontinued.
do I really need to upgrade/change to a more recent windows?
if so, where can I get a copy of win 7 or 8 for the least expensive amount.
I have a qld.edu email.

Windows 8, once you upgrade to 8.1 and install classic shell, isnt that bad.
couldn't agree more.
context: www.classicshell.net is a software that can be installed to bring back a Windows7 style start button (plus a few more things).
Therefore, you get Windows 8 that looks like Windows 7.
Not really,
On the surface it feels the same, try adjusting any settings ie control panel.
There's a big reason most companies offer a wind back to win 7 with the sale of WIN 8 laptops now.
I find windows 8 better for my laptop and windows 7 better for my pc.
If you are a teacher you can get Office Pro Plus 2013 and Windows 7 or 8 for $15 each, in WA anyway. Must be something similar for QLD.
Or you can just go the Win8 student offer for under $70 here then upgrade to 8.1 for free
I (through uni) can purchase these at a (significantly) reduced cost via "insight" http://au.insight.com
Contact the uni IT for user and password details, log in and order. Good luck.
Microsoft has a bad habit of changing names and locations of things like
"install/uninstall program files"
But the jump to win 8 is a wide wide chasm.
Its generally acknowledged that the world wide drop in PCs is attributed to WIN 8.
Most companies offer the ability to wind back any computer they sell from win 8 to win 7
I upgraded fom XP through Win 7 and then to Win 8 and oh geez..nightmare!! but then to Win 8.1 which is just bearable with "classic view start menu".
But you can go direct to 8.1 for $70 from here:

If you finish with Win 7, 8 or 8.1 make sure you install "god mode" so you can manage these newer versions.

Yes and you will not regret upgrading to windows 7, windows 8 on the other hand you may.
