$6 Doner Kebabs, Hunter Arcade Food Court, Sydney CBD

790

Madness, and in the middle of the Sydney CBD! Good quality kebabs at a price you can afford!

Lotus Kebabs, L1 Food Court, Hunter Arcade.
Directions: Enter from Hunter Street, go left, up the escalators, turn right, walk up the little steps, it's there on the left.

Price Name Meat + cheese
$6.00 Doner ? 50c
$7.00 Chicken Chicken 50c
$5.50 Falafel None 50c

They also have a "Doner Burger" which I haven't tried yet for $3.50.

I've finally decided to spill the beans on this place after enjoying properly quality testing for the past month. And when I say kebab I mean KEBAB, the price includes everything except the cheese. Do not be fooled by the places with kebab on their store signs….

  • None of this kebab "style" salad wrap with a tincy bit meat on it that they don't even toast (I'm looking at you "kebab" shop under the westpac building).
  • None of this $9 price which basically includes nothing, then gets added to: tabouleh +$0.50, cheese +$0.50, hummus +$0.50, + garlic sauce + etc + = $10.50! (i'm looking at you sneaky kebab shop below Myer)

Drinks are also at a "reasonable", for a T/A place, $1.50.

Yes i know, cheaper to walk around with a toothpick "sampling" like a good OzBargainer, or make your own lunch or whatever…
But for those wanting their hot fresh kebab fix for no effort and low cost, you can't go past this place at lunch. Keen to know if anyone else has a decent cheap lunch place in the CBD.

  • I'm gonna guess you're affiliated? Your name even mentions 'chicken' lol.

I may have been single handedly keeping them in business and/or supporting the store owner's children through their expensive private school since I discovered this place.

      • -2

        So, that's a yes ;)

  • +6

Everything in the hunter arcade is approx $2,cheaper than elsewhere.. Are you gonna post $7 three choices with rice or noodles meals as well?? Standard prices for average tasting but below average quality food.. No deal here!

    • +9

Agreed about huter arcade, some pretty cheap stuff in there. My experience with the other places in hunter arcade has been pretty bad. DEAR GOD STAY AWAY FROM THE FISH AND CHIP SHOP!

But this place is actually pretty good quality and few people know about it. Thought it was worth posting so others can enjoy.

      • I eat at the fish and chip shop about once a week (the one near Michelles Patisserie). Can I ask why you make that assessment? Is it really that bad quality?
        /concerned

        • Don't think there is a Michele's next to the one I'm talking about. It's on the top lvl. Near the southern end

        • Mr Bongs? near the vietnamese arcade?

  • Most things in the Hunter arcade are pretty cheap.

Used to come here lots, many many years ago. The owners were very nice back then, but they left.
    Haven't been recently.

  • There's a good food court under the 303 Pitt St building. Reasonable quality pork rolls for $7. Good sized sushi boxes for $8 etc…

    • +12

$7 is a premium price for a pork roll!

Anything special about it compared to the $4-5 ones?

      • There is a $4.50 viet pork roll place at the other end of hunter arcade. I really didn't like the one I bought.

    • Thanks, will need to check that out.

My sushi place a few years ago used to be hidden below the BT building (cnr market and kent). Awesome quailty massive sushi rolls for $1.90. They'd even cut them up. Big lunch for under $6.

Still good quality, not overly expensive but no longer a great bargain.

    • +1

That is pretty much an exclusively asian food court but yeah good value IMO.

      • +2

On second thoughts… they are around $5… my mistake…

        walks away with head down

        • +1

walks away with head down in a kebab

          fixed that for you

  • +16

A real OZbargainer would goto Hunter Arcade after 2pm to buy lunch for <$5

    • +1

haah, I'll admit I've been tempted walking past some of those places late afternoon. Bain-marie scrapings for dinner!

    • +5

a real ozbargainer would go to subway, buy a $7 footlong, then sell that second half to someone in the line for $4.50, with the incentive they don't have to wait in line AND it's cheaper than the $5.25 or whatever they sell a 6-inch for, which would leave them with a 6-inch sub for $2.50.

      • +9

        shakes head

A real ozbargainer would also have done the survey for a free cookie!

        • +4

A real OzBargainer would eat other peoples' table scraps.

        • +3

there is a Asian lady in hunter food court actually eats peoples left over….

      • Someone actually neg'd. It's okay! I don't actually do this!! (although it's a fantastic idea :P)

    • +1

A real OZB will go there at 1:50 and wait for the signs to go up.

Personal favorite stalls: Thai shop (goes quite quickly), Chinese shop next to the jap shop, and korean shop.

Cheapest would be the Korean shop (if it's still there) at 3.90 (the couple of years back) with 2 choices and noodles/rice.

    • +2

This Ozbargainer has organised a group buy with work mates, and haggled a discount.

  • +3

The Vietnamese pork rolls from Hunter are pretty good also. If the Kebabs have always been this price, it's technically not a bargain…

  • +2

I don't get how this is a bargain… it's normal price in the Hunter Connection foodcourt isn't it (where everything is cheap relative to normal city prices)?

    • +3

So many complainers. Neg the deal if you don't think it's a deal and post your own! You got a better deal on a fresh hot kebab in the middle of the CDB? hell, if you do then I actually wanna hear about it.

I see it as a great bargain.

No one I speak to knows about this place, it's hard to find and it's actually good quality. Hence why i consider it a deal. Just because it is their regular price doesn't make it less of a deal.

      • Thanks for sharing. Definitely going to go try it soon. Love kebabs and haven't seen them this cheap in years.

        • No worries. let me know how you go.

My pet peve is the kebab shop where they slug you with every little extra, ask you if you want tabouleh, cheese, hummus but don't say the price. and you endup with a $15 order. The one below Myer is the worst at this IMO.

        • +1

Had my usual Doner (not Chicken) Kebab with garlic and hot chilli sauce with lettuce, tomato, onion & tabouli for lunch today and found it decent size and quality. Good value for $6 if you are not in a hurry. It's a small place and the two ladies working it looked the part but a bit overrun. Shame I am not close by but would definitely go again if/when in that part of the CBD.

        • lol. I should have warned the old nonnas i was going to post this! They wouldn't have seen the OzB horde descending.

          Glad you enjoyed.

    • +4

It's called OzBARGAIN not OzSPECIAL. Something can still be a bargain relative to the market even if it is an everyday price.

      • It's also called OzBARGAIN and not OzADVERTISING. I didn't neg the deal because I'm not for discouraging people to post, but if we all posted deals on every single item that was the cheapest at that particular moment in time, we'd have OzClassifieds. There is always the forum as is normally suggested for bargains that are more advertisements.

        • +3

but if we all posted deals on every single item that was the cheapest at that particular moment in time

You're doing it wrong. That's exactly what ozb is, and that's why I'm here. I want to find the cheapest price.

Perhaps that's why you've only posted two deals in 4 years.

…and use the report button if that's where you think this deal belongs.

        • +4

Perhaps I should post the $4.50 Vietnamese Pork Rolls too then, and the 5 for $3 Spring Rolls. $8.50 Norths Sandwiches are the cheapest sandwiches this side of the city maybe I'll post that one too.
I guess I have a different view of OzBargain being for unique bargains (exceptionally low prices, specials, freebies) and so yes, that is why I have only posted two deals in 4 years. I have faith in the many mods monitoring these deals and they are extremely quick with moving deals they don't think are worthy, so I assume they think it's worthy.

  • +6

Dude, I can taste your passion for this bargain

  • Donor kebabs? Kidney please.

    • didn't say what type of beans i spilled

  • +1

the "Meat = ?" is great

  • -1

    $6 Doner Kebabs

    Mmmm…

  • +1

    Is a donation required?

  • Tried the kebab place under myers food court. Overpriced IMHO (but i guess its due to the high rent they would most likely be paying).
My goto kebab place is @ Market City during the day and the one next to scruffy murphys after a night out.
So got to give this place a try. Good price too!

I agree, the viet pork rolls at the hunter st food court is pretty good. they have a wide variety as well and for $4.50 is reasonably priced.
The sushi next to it was great at $2.00 but i think its gone up now so havent been back in awhile.

    • Yep up to $2.50 each now.

  • +3

i've been here several times. Pretty decent for the price.

Not sure if this constitutes a 'deal' since it's the normal price?

  • just finished one

    pretty std, kebab

    cheap for cbd

I'm stuffed and will not be able to load up on dinner

    • I'm stuffed and will not be able to load up on dinner

Which pretty much means it was a great kebab…

  • Anyone know what time it/food court closes?

    • depends on the store, I've had luck getting food at 4.30pm in the food court, but i remember some stores had closed by then. I think this Kebab store was closed when I went there at 4pm once, but the chinese shop right next to it (also in this photo) was still open

  • +2

Didn't feel like a kebab for lunch but saw a more than usual line outside - ChickenTalon you should get a cut from the amount of business you're bringing in!

    • I'll take payment in the kebab form!

  • +2

Cheap drinks can be found around the corner. The newsagent in the arcade sells Coca Cola varieties for $1

    • cold? if so, good work. Where exactly is the newsagent? Haven't seen it.

  • +3

There's an orange chinese/vietnamese shop in an aisle at the very back of the hunter arcade top floor with a mini food court inside (alot of seating etc). The First store on the left hand side when you walk in has orange signs. On the right of that shop is a small hot booth where they actually sell $3.50 rice meals with 2 choices pre-picked for you

i visit them. alot. for 3.50 rice meals :)

it's taken out of their pre-cooked range which hunter arcade is full of anyway

    usually selections are:

rice - satay beef, satay chicken
    rice - pork chops
rice - black bean beef with satay chicken

    etc etc

The Thai place next door to them make wicked Thai as well! Happy Thai i think it's called

    • I like the stewed beef but it's a little fattening to eat here all the time. It's also 3 boxes for $10 if you're going to go with friends :)

  • The Pork Rolls at Hunter Connection are not always good. Sometimes it's great but most of the time, it isn't. Depends on who makes it. New staff are very slow.

Thanks for letting us know. The kebab place underneath Myer sell their kebabs for $9.50 (It was $9.50 last year). I always ask for it in a pita roll ($2 on it's own) though instead of the usual flatbread. No extra cost :)

It's a bit of a walk for me to get to Hunter Connection these days but Pittsway Arcade on Pitt Street have yummy food and it's pretty good value too.

I also like the sushi rolls on Bathurst Street. Any two for $5 and they are very big, or 3 for $7.

    Young Ones, Episode 4: Boring…

NEIL: I'll tell you somewhere else I've never been.

    RICK: Where?

    NEIL: Down.

NEIL: Which one are we going to?

    MIKE: Down the Kebab.

VYVYAN: Doner kebab? I've already eaten.

NEXT SCENE: The band finishes playing and the crowd applauds just as MIKE, NEIL, VYVYAN and RICK enter The Kebab And Calculator.

  • Buyer beware with hunter connection food court. I've seen a few of these places listed on the food authority website.
Can't go wrong with a sandwich from Luneburger which will only set you back $4

    • +2

with great risk comes great reward!

  • So whats the maximum price a person would pay for a 'standard' kebab?

    • +3

I'm sure heaps of people have handed over $50s in a late night kebab crazed stupor and gotten no change.

In fact I'm pretty sure I have done this.

    • $5.99

    • In the Sydney CBD prices range from $7.50-$8.50 for a standard doner kebab.

      • yeah $8 in the suburbs

up to $10 in the CBD and big areas (which I think is too much)

$6 is bargain basement but I've seen as low as $4-$5 at the markets (probably dodging tax)

funny to see so many people who work Wynyard

        • I paid $9.50 for a takeaway chicken kebab in sultan's lounge enmore. Bloody ripoff since it's in the suburbs.

  • Anyone knows if they open on weekend?

  • Wish we had kebabs in Adelaide

      • Thats Yiros, not a kebab.
        the meat is different.

I thought kebabs were readily available all over Australia since i can't travel more then 5km in any direction in Sydney without bumping into a kebab place

  • It's a Yiros.
    Get it right!

    • +1

Sign says it's a "Doner Kebab". You wanna argue with the two nonnas who run the shop? I don't, i need them to focus on making quality Doner Kebabs

      • It's a SA thing. We call your Kebabs Yiroses and Our Kebabs are skewers'

  • +1

Not as good value but I like Insomnia on Park St. Owners are great guys.

  • I'll try this place tomorrow…slightly more expensive from my usual $2.50 Coles's Snitzchel lunch..haha

  • I've heard of a little hidden food court behind woolworths at town hall with cheap Vietnamese food. I'd love to go give it a try but I've never spotted it. Does anybody know where I'm talking about/recommend it? Could you also help me find it :)

    • Well, I haven't been there in literally decades, but at the back of Woolies' ground floor, in the corner furthest from the street corner, if you know what I mean, there was an exit to Pittsway Arcade. In the arcade, go downstairs to the food court.

There's also (as the name implies) an entrance from Pitt St, somewhere near where the Church of Scientology is/was, if memory serves.

I vaguely remember a good laksa was to be had there. At the food court, not the CoS!

      • I think the one you are referring to is in the basement down stairs from in the short arcade at 303 Pitt St. that can also be accessed from the small south east corner entrance inside Town Hall Woolworths ground level near the Hoyts Kiosk disc rental rental machines.

Yeah, it's kind of hidden away but I'd be buy lunch there every day if I could resist the temptation to over eat because it is great value.

  • +1

Plus 1+ from a fellow kebab enthusiast over in WA

    • Cross boarder solidarity brother!

What are the prices like over there for the humble kebab?

  • yes I used to go here all the time when I worked on Clarence St, same owners since forever and the Turkish plates are yummy indeed but I don't trust Hunter Connection these days. If you read the stories about the penalty notices given by the food authority then you would understand, yes mice and roaches among other things were mentioned in these reports. unfortunately I couldn't find any links to the storeis however as it was quite a few years ago now.

  • +1

Just had one now. Quite acceptable. Not the greatest, but still a decent kebab at the price.
(I rather needed a kebab after last night's hectic Origin & Socceroos!!!!)
