Cheap/Good Hotels in Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau? 3 Kids and I. Good Pool Essential!

Hi Guys,

Can anyone recommend a good hotel (but cheapish) in Singapore for me and my 3 kids to spend a week in late June? They will revolt against me if it doesn't have a good pool! Actually, I'd take a great pool over a great hotel! I'd prefer to be within an MRT station or two of the general central area.

Thanks a lot.

Forgot: I also need the same advice for Hong Kong AND Macau as we go there after Singapore..! Thanks.

    I stayed in this one:

I loved it. Was cheap, and done the job fine. Room was small, but we didn't care because we rarely stay in there anyways. Right next to Circular Quay MTR (across the road). and short walk to anything else.

    • I stayed there as well. It was the best value hotel with a pool at the time.

  • Thanks Mr Lee - that looks superb (for us anyway)!

If Sentosa is an option for SG, we stayed in the Festive hotel. It had a good size family room. Got it at 50% off rrp on wotif.
In HK I stayed at the Pacific Hotel. Pretty bland hotel, but good location and the price was good. Not sure it they have a family room, though.

We loved the festive on sentosa. You can use the pool at the hard rock hotel next door as well. We spent one night at marina bay sands - expensive but for a pool with a difference well worth it.
The public pools in Hong Kong and Singapore are great too for about $2 each. When we didn't have a pool these were a great novelty for the kids - and a nice break in the middle of sightseeing.

For Hong Kong, with 4 'people' and want a swimming pool, surprisingly, 'cheap' accommodation means a 5 star hotel.

My family and I (2 kids, 2 adults) have been to Hong Kong 4 or 5 times in the last 10 yrs or so. We usually stay at one of the 5 stars hotels in Admiralty (Hong Kong Island, right above the MTR station). All of us fit comfortably in one standard room (2 double beds). All those hotels have beautiful OUTDOOR swimming pools. Marriott is the cheapest of the three, (the others are Conrad and Shangri-la)…all very good.

With cheaper hotels, there's no way you can fit 4 people in one room. Basically, two 3-star hotel room cost more than one 5-star hotel room. Also, most 3/4 stars hotels don't have swimming pool (no space!), and if they do, it would be a dodgy indoor pool.

    Enjoy your trip!

    • Great advice, thanks NancyCat!

I'm heading over to Singapore early June and used http://www.lastminute.com.au/ They have some spring specials going for Singapore. Maybe check them out. I tried to use the Visa link thru Hotelclub but the site was so slow and non-responsive at times I gave up on it.

Singapore - The Swissotel Merchant Court, great pool with slides right in the middle of all the action with a train station underneath. We also paid the extra to go executive level with the free breakfast (mornings) and nibbles and cocktails (evening).

Hong Kong - The Auberge on Lantau Island. It's a simple 20 min ferry ride to downtown Hong Kong and getting to the hotel from the airport is so simple (just look for the hotel concierge at the airport to your left as you exit immigration). The pool there is pretty good, there are no cars and it's local shuttle buses everywhere (the hotel even has a free shuttle to Disneyland…once or twice a day)…rooms are nice and big, hotel is nice and quiet (even when absolutely chockers…we were there over Easter)…the breakfast buffet is pretty good and even coped well when the hotel was full (but of course really really noisy then…but you can sit outside so not so echo-ey). And if you choose not to go the hotel breakfast option DB North Plaza is right at your doorstep…or the main plaza and ferry terminal is only 5 mins away by regular bus services.

Macau - didn't get there so can't help…but if I went, I'd probably go Venetian.

    • That sounds brilliant. Thanks Backpaqer.

      • Also… In Singapore, the Fullerton has the nicest rooms we've ever stayed in… The breakfast buffet is probably the best ever. The location is sensational. But the pool is super boring. Though the view from the pool is pretty good (overlooks the merlion)

        • Yeah, wow, The Fullerton.. there's a fabulous hotel! Bit beyond our meagre budget this time around I'm afraid. Next trip definitely! ;-)

Only paid $150 for the night as a walk-in off the street (no booking).
Then paid $80 for a S-class Merc transfer to the airport (worth it!)

Just returned from Macau a month ago. Stayed at the Sheraton Macao Cotai Central. It's on the Cotai Strip and very easy access to the Venetian and a bunch of other big chains, but for a fraction of the cost. Booked a cheap room with two double (possibly queen?) beds and squeezed four adults into the two beds. You could probably even request an extra bed if need be. The hotel pool is quite lovely. Transportation wise, free hotel shuttle buses to/from the ferry terminal, or an easy walk to some of the other hotels that run shuttle buses elsewhere. Really enjoyed my stay there because of how cheap it was compared to the nearby hotels, whilst still being quite luxurious and super convenient.

  • Brilliant, thanks obses2ion. That's a great suggestion, and I'm not even going to ask why you squeezed 4 adults into 2 queen beds……….. :-D

    • I am an OzBargainer after all :-)

    HK - Panda hotel.
they have nice family suites with 2 bedrooms and a loungeroom (but only a few of these suites when I wsas there last year). 1 king in one room, 2 singles int he other. each bedroom has a large screen tv and bathroom. the lounge has another large screen TV . nespresso machine in room + bar fridge. pool is good. there is a 3 level basement full of shops -including 100yen Daiso and Aeon (japanese supermarket + department store) plus restaurants , electronics shop (zoppo store), etc.

I would stay there again. only issue is that it is 9 MTR stops from the city, but with trains every 10 minutes it's not really an issue. if you're going to have to take a train 1 stop or 10 stops it matters relatively little.
