Selling Australian old pounds £?

I Have been looking around on where I coulld sell my old aussie pounds notes, which are from the 1900's, they are all notes in pretty minty condtion.

I know that there are places like ebay, and gumtree, And collectors that might by them. I would prefer to avoid the Ebay charge rates. I could have them in classifieds, But that probably won't be a great idea as this is Ozbargain!!

Heard even banks still take these old notes?
Anyway, whats the best place to have these notes sold?
cheers.

Try hunting around for a local antique coin fair, take them along for appraisal & you'll get some first-hand advice from dealers/valuers about what your notes are worth on the open market.

    • I have taken them for evaluation which worth $5k-$20 depending on which one. Just trying to sell this somewhe.

Erm, don't take them to a bank to 'cash', and do stash them away somewhere safe (and dry!). I love old Aussie currency, and have books with all the estimated values of pre-decimal Australian currency in them (released by Greg McDonald every year), if you PM me the serial numbers of your pound notes I can tell you what that book says they're worth, in various conditions (mint, "VF (very fine) "good" etc.)…
If you have numerous pre-1950s notes in mint condition, then you're probably in for a very pleasant surprise… but there's a big difference between mint and "minty"/"very fine" etc., re value.
You could also try taking them to a registered professional for an 'unofficial/quick appraisal'; they could probably also tell you how you're likely to get the most cash for them, if you're sure you want to sell them. If they tell you they're "not worth that much" and offer you cash for them on the spot though, politely decline and seek a second opinion or two; they may be scamming you!
In the meantime, keep those notes clean, dry, stashed somewhere away from the light (and light fingers), and unhandled/unfolded… you could have something really cool there! If you do go to a registered appraiser, would you mind PMing me to let me know which one you went to, and how it went?

  • Erm, it seems that your statement that "… they are all notes in pretty minty condition" is not correct, unfortunately. "Mint condition" literally means that they pretty much look like they did just after they were minted. The notes in these pics are way, way inferior to that grade. Thus they would be worth only a tiny fraction of the same notes that were actually in "mint condition".

  • Thanks, these notes don't actually belong to me, they are my fathers, he wanted me to check online for pricing.
ONe if these or perhaps another I remember where like in similar condtion like these was given a quote that it was worth $6000. I just wanted to find out how much of loss from comparing mint to average or whatever you may call them, cheers.

  • Doing a few checks just now, stay tuned… I'll send you a PM in a few minutes with more details. It's fun looking into this, the pics are good too :-)

  • OK PM sent DEv, check it out…

  • Cheers mate, thanks for the help!

    • No worries, it was fun. Let me know what a "real expert" has to say about them, after looking at the actual notes :)
