Using food past it's use-by date

Anyone else uses the good old sniff test instead of looking that the manufacturer's use-by dates?
I've had milk past 5 days and still smelling and tasting normal. Question is are these use-by dates accurate or just some marketing ploy?

What have you eaten that has way passed it's due date?

  • Old school way bad eggs float, bad milk curdles in hot water.

I test every egg b4 I cook it. Milk your nose will usually warn you off.
Cheese and sour cream just need the mold scraped off and are good.

I won't go near meat or seafood past it's expiry date.

If its a salt or sugary product it's fine unless it makes you heave.

If it lives in the cupboard the only thing that will chase me off is excessive weevils.

Best b4 dates are just a good excuse to chuck stuff you don't.

Although this is a theory that I was brought up with, Science has taught me that there is a risk cause if the mould is a toxin producer, the toxin will have dispersed through the product..

      • Interesting, I will read up on this so I can be a 'fridge mold know it all' at home.
