Skyscanner has some for October. I'm not sure why United's prices are so high at the moment. Generally east coast goes for around $1500, and west coast slightly less. Guess it depends when you fly.
Alternative legs would be via Hawaii through Jetstar then a cheap domestic from HI. It will be tough timing out sales.
Air NZ via Aukland can be good however it adds a bit of time.
Via Japan (Osaka, Tokyo) on Jetstar then a flight from there. I flew Jetstar to Osaka and found a cheap flight from Osaka to NY direct on Air China.
I'm always looking for cheaper alternatives however its always the inbound international flight into the US that kills you on price. I wish one of the budget airlines would get into the space.

Much better than going via LAX though. I absolutely hate LAX. Given a choice of MEL-AKL-SFO and MEL-LAX-SFO, I'd choose the former every time.
United will generally always be the cheapest on that route however you are looking at close to $1K RT.
