Help with streaming movies

Guys need some help in what media streaming is best for me

I want to stream my movie collection off my iMac and display cover art and description for all my movies. Most of my movies are MP4 only a few are AVI and MKV

I also have a external hard drive I can hook into a media streamer via USB to play movies off that.

I just want the unit to do it all for me rather then me programming it with hours of time over and over again to get it to do what I want

So what one?

WD
Apple TV
Chrome Cast

Others?

  • Plex on your iMac
Chromecast if you want to play it on a TV.

Plex handles the conversions from old codecs like XViD to H.264 for Chromecast.

Chromecast support on Plex is now free.

Grab the iOS or Android app so you don't even need to anything but leave your computer on.

  • Ok thanks
    ATM
I use serviio to stream my movies to TV etc but there is no metadata (coverart or discription)

Can AppleTV use Plex or only Google Chromecast?

    • I have Plex set up on my ATV3 using a thing called PlexConnect. It wasn't the simplest thing in the world to set up (mine's running on a FreeNAS box hosting all my files), but works pretty smoothly. Look up PlexConnect if you're interested. You need to do a fw different things to get it all going.

I imagine setting it up on the Chromecast is probably a bit simpler.

  • Thanks
Gonna try Apple TV as I can air play foxtel go too

  • Get an AppleTV 2 as they can be jailbreaked to use aTVFlash which automatically loads metadata and cover art and heaps more. http://firecore.com/atvflash-black
