Pretty good price, and compares favourably to a refurbished unit from Benq Australia ($729 with only 90 days warranty): http://shop.benq.com.au/w1070-refurbished.html

    • Wouldn't an LED projector be a better buy?

      • +3

A great question and I thought the same myself initially. I was holding out for a decent LED full HD projector in the form of the Optomo HD91 … Until I saw the price (RRP $4000)… You can read the review here(http://www.projectorcentral.com/optoma_hd91_led_projector_re…).

Note the lumens - 1000 .. Compared to the benq's 2000 …. Owning the w1070 myself, I must say its uber bright when you have it at a screen size of around 110" so realistically a lower lumen rating is not that bad..

When I checked the wattage, it uses more or less the same amount of power as a standard bulb projector .. One would think a led bulb would mean far lower power usage, but it seems lamps are already pretty efficient and the reason they are popular is because they are cheap to produce and give a very good purity of source of light.. Now I could go into a long winded speech with the pros and cons of each, but I believe generally the price is the killer right now and lower light output.

I do not doubt that eventually leds will become the common light source in projectors in the long term, as the technology is refined and further developed and prices decrease.

As the Benq is rated for upto 6000 hours in economy mode, the bulb will last you a long time (but will slightly dim for the first few 100 hours or so like any projector)…

For what you pay and what you get with the W1070 its a good projector.. its not perfect but at the price it's performance is considered very very good … I have it connected to my xbox and playstation and its great fun for racing games where you get a very large screen experience - and the sound of the game masks out the projectors noise.

I look forward to seeing benq release a led version of this series of projectors which will hopefully reduce the cooling noise, while offering a good value for money proposition and win a new loyal following.

P.S. I believe LG have some nice 720P LED projectors that are good performers but are around the $800 mark….

  • Price for this projector holds well. My bro bought 1 after pm @OW for $870+ 6 months ago.

  • Shame on you oz seller

  • -2

I have one too.. But I would rather buy from aus seller

  • I have one of these been running well for a couple of years - great picture but is quite noisy.

    • How often do you change light bulb?

  • +1

Be aware if you are sensitive of the rainbow effect.

    • Second this. However, this is probably the only gripe I have with it. All friends and family have said nothing but great things about the picture quality. The rainbow effect is only really noticeable (for me) during low light scenes with a bright light i.e. candlelight, streetlight, white text etc.

With that said, it's a great projector. Noise level I don't see as an issue when compared to what are now tiny plasmas/lcds, plus if you're in a home theatre the sound will generally drown out the fan noise. Running in Economy mode keeps the fan at it's quietest.

How does warranty work for amazon?

  • Just bought one of these at OW 2 weeks ago for 935 price matched (matched some Melb based online retailer whose name escapes me) and then got the GST refund (thanks to a business trip overseas) making it about 850 for me. Haven't ceiling mounted yet, or installed the amp and sound, but tried it on the wall a couple of times and am quite impressed so far. any recommendations for a good home theatre installer in western sydney?

    • Hey Raghuchary. Can you pls explain the GST refund o/s trip technique? How does one do this?

      • If you are traveling overseas you can claim GST refund for items purchased in past 60 days. I think the minimum cost of the item should be $300 in a single invoice. You have to fill a form and attach your original invoice ans drop it in the drop box located near the duty free zone (in Sydney) after security check. They didn't even check if I am carrying the item with me last time and also the refund was processed within 2 days.

Here is a link with more details on the GST refund

  • It might sound silly but couldn't stop asking, do you guys replace your TV worth projector and watch TV on it? If yes what distanc do you need it to be mounted before the screen… I'd imagine you'd need a bIG room for it

    • +1

I still watch tv and news on my plasma, my projector is for movies, sport and live concert etc…(actually sometimes tv as well). I don't often watch tv on projector because 5000~6000 hrs of the lamp is a lot for movies, but not so much if you watch a lot of tv.

      • +2

Not to be rude, but unless you watch a huge amount of TV, even 5-6 hours a day would give you 3 years of lamp life. So I'm thinking you'd probably only need to replace the lamp once (twice at best) throughout the time that most would keep the unit!

    • +1

Different projectors have different throw distances, so you can set up a projector in a fairly small room depending on the throw distance. Light control within the room will also determine to a large extent what you can watch during the daytime. Watching TV on a projector is just as good as watching movies. With the larger screen you can often pick up on things which would otherwise pass you by on a smaller screen.

  • Id go with this one as a preference… slightly more at $860 but better specs imo..

  • I have been waiting for this to go on sale…but yes if anyone has any experience with warranties for electronics on Amazon that would be fantastic..

  • Ships to Australia. Is about $30 cheaper shipped to my OZ address than a relo in CA.

That'd be because of the State Tax in Cali.
They don't charge the GST for Australia. That's up to local authorities, and is currently not payable on shipments under $1000 shipping inclusive!
Note: That amount was speculated to drop to something silly like $50!

  • I have used the 1080ST the short throw version, apart for ST everything else is exactly the same with this model (and vertical shift I think).
This is best value for money projector you could get right now, the 3D affect is outstanding, my $4k LED Epson doesnt compete with this projector on 3D, the picture quality is top notch, highly recommended.

  • I don't need one, now I want one

    • Tat is the spirit of ozb

  • how are you getting $812 shipped? its coming out to $AUD 844 for me?

    • At checkout I get these prices in USD:

      Order Summary
      Items: $729.00
      Shipping & handling: $31.90
      Total before tax: $760.90
Estimated tax to be collected: $0.00
      Order total: $760.90

Converted to AUD at Google finance I get AUD 812.52. Obviously you would have to use something like a 28 Degrees CC to get that sort of rate.

      • thanks, I opted for the USD payment option instead of their own conversion…I am hoping my credit card company (Citi) wont rip me off on the exchange rate….

  • NO DEAL - I got one of these from officeworks for $806 with Australian warranty. Benq are known for high breakdown rates so I would personally never import one. Too little saving IMO

    • Well done, I have been checking office works and other online sites in oz but the cheapest I have found was 965+ shipping ….I almost bought it at 995 from OW the I saw this…. Hope mine does not break within a year

    • How are you were able to get it for $806?

      • +1

        They used the force!!!
Apparently Leia now has two hopes! Obione and Obiwan

    • I also got mine around $810 (6 months ago) with Oz warranty, by using OW to price-beat another local provider.

  • Can anyone advise how to watch TV by using a projector?
Looks like NO TV Tuner with it.

    • $815.24 paid by using bankwest platinum credit card, is the rate better than 28 degrees?

    • +1

Gee I don't know dude. If only there was a little box you could buy that would tune in TV? Wouldn't it be great if you could get foxtel on something like that, or maybe even free to air? If only retailers like Kmart, Myer, Target or Dicksmith would stock some king of TV tuning box.

  • My Citi credit card billed me a total of $841… Compared to amazons aud conversion of $844… It would be more realistic to show the Amazon Aud price in the title since not everyone has 28 degrees or bank west… Most people who post prices from amazon will post the amazon aud price….
