I just tried to return an item to bilo without a receipt and they refused to take it. The item was a box of chocolates purchased for a gift but I did not see my aunt over the mothers day weekend as I expected so did not get to give them. I had purchased 4 boxes of chocolates as gifts but decided I did not want to leave them at home so took them back to Bilo and they refused to take them back? Did not give me a reason just said no as I did not have a receipt.
Just wonder what my rights are if returning an item without the receipt

i think the biggest issue is the no receipt. cant prove he bought it there or what price he paid.
That's beside the point. Even with a receipt there is no obligation to take it back.
You don't actually have to have a receipt, but you DO have to have proof of purchase.
Is it right that if they are faulty then they must replace them or is that only if you have a receipt? How can they know that you purchased it from them?
You need some kind of proof of purchase, I think that includes bank statement (something like that), but receipts is the easiest and fastest way to prove your purchase. If you paid by cash….good luck!
can't speak for bilo, but other supermarkets have a figure of around $15 to return items. If you took 4 back your hard out of luck and on top of that, you probably seemed dodgy
Did you pay by cash or by card? If you happened to pay by card and the chocolates were the ONLY items you purchased at the time.. you could show them your bank statement which will have the BILO store details, date of purchase, and the amount you paid in total. Then they can easily divide it by four to confirm that you paid the same price as they had the boxes at the time.
If you paid by card but bought other stuff, then this method will not help you :P
I should add - this is the reason I personally love using my card rather than making purchases by cash. Makes tracking things much easier in case you lose a receipt :)
out of curiosity , how does it work when your statement is not itemized ? refund wise. do they just say oh you made a purchase for the amount this item is/more and accept to refund it ?
eat them and stop worry about it
what is dodgy about returning a product that is unused?
Why bother trying to return them without a receipt ?
Just have a Forrest Gump moment and enjoy !
didn't the op say they had 4 boxes of chocolates, guess there was more than enough
First of all the items were not faulty, so you actually have no legal right to return them. Shops that allow change of mind returns do it out of goodwill, they aren't obligated to do so.
Secondly, as others have pointed out, without a receipt or credit card statement, there is no evidence that you bought the chocolates from them.
Just enjoy the chocolates :)
Just enjoy the chocolates :)
+1
yes you are so right was just wondering what the law is. I gave them to teacher at sons school, figure teachers could always do with a treat
As there is nothing wrong with the items (i.e. they are not faulty), then you have no rights, even if you had the receipt. A store does not have to refund if you change your mind (although many do).
