Domain Registry of America Scam

So one of my clients received a letter or email from Domain Registry of America telling them that their domain was due for renewal and he went ahead and paid them… stupidly… I mean anything with "America" in the name just screams of scam to me.

He was scammed out of $120.

Anyways is there any possible way for him to get his money back? He paid with credit card. His domain is held with an Australian company, definitely not with Domain Registry of America.

  • I would be more worried about them having my credit card details. Call the bank and they should be able to sort these things out

Credit cards usually have insurances for these kind of transactions

Yeah I've suggested that he should go straight to the bank and let them know what has happened.

  • Ok so few things:

He should not give the scammers his EPP code for the domain transfer. These are dodgy people so even if you can't get the money back it's better write it off as a learning experience than try an gets some value out of it.

These types of scams are listed on http://www.scamwatch.gov.au/content/index.phtml/tag/domainna… it would be best to tell the credit card issuer about this so they know it's a type of scam.

I've also heard of a company called Domain Renewal Group, anything from them goes straight into the shredder.

Always google the company name first. Searching domain registry of America yields mostly result calling them scams.

  • Yep scotty. I google everything. I read someone threatened them with the ACCC and they apparently refunded the money immediately. I'll catch up with my client this week and see how he's going. I bet he hasn't even contacted his bank about his credit card yet…

It's amazing how easily people fall for scams like this. Some people never think twice before handing over money!
