Im in sydney looking for the cheapest split solar hot water system after the rebates have been applied. Currently have electric tank only few years old, so dont want to be hit for lots to replace something quite new , but would upgrade if cheap and split system panel and electric.(no gas). thanks

Thank you ozpete, I have heard the heat pumps can be quite noisy like air con unit. The info you get from web sites tells you they are quiet but the people ive spoken with confirm what you say that they are as noisy as air cond unit and is the reason i would prefer the solar panel water heater.
I bought a heat pump model - for a net $350 (increased to $500 after I had it moved outside). This works on offpeak, and it heats very well using reverse cycle heat pump (like airconditioner). Stiebel -Eltron is model. Google for contact details. 300+Litre. Advantages - no need to have booster when its shaded. No issues with damage to solar panels. Supposed to be on par with electrical savings. but needs place where noise like an aircond is not an issue. If you have garage its a good spot. Just an idea
