Having just returned to Coles a "MTV" brand HD tuner set-top box because (a) it broke, and (b) it wasn't much good even before it quit working, I am in the market to buy a replacement. What can somebody recommend, and are there any good "deals" going?
HD set top box tuner wanted

Dick smith also has a number of close outs at $99 these are HD units (They have a SD unit for $29)
DS also lists the stores that have stock.
Given the introduction of a number of these boxes like the MTV at better prices, I think we will see price changes coming in soon. As well many new TV's have these now built in so the market for the HD units is now defined, so the scramble with resulting price drops, to capitalise on this now reducing market will grow.
If you can wait you should see more drops in the pipeline
undiesdownunder - looked on ebay - is this HD or SD. It appears to be SD only
I bought my HD tuner on "Catchoftheday.com" for $120 its a thompson and sure does justice to my LCD TV.. you might watch that wesite got good deals on it sometimes.
Oooh. Sorry if I was at all misleading. I am not a techno gizmo wizz.
Thanks to all 3 of you for your comments. I've taken your advice and am currently bidding on a Thompson HD unit on ebay, plus I've reserved one of the Dick Smith set-top boxes in case I don't win the Thompson unit. Who says people don't listen to advice?!?
have a look at this [deal](http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?products_… "Panasonic HD tuner") .. the only problem is its "refurbished" not New :(
I'll let you know if it's any good. Ordered one today
alrite … yeah do let us know … cheers

Great deal - sorry cant vote on this one.
The unit arrived yesterday - its a bit bulkier than the other units, but the reception quality is excellent. Where my cheap hard drive unit cant pick up ABC without artifacts this unit is crystal clear. Works on standard TV with HD channels (although only SD display).Has some other nice features. Couldn't tell with my unit that it had ever been used. All accessories still sealed inc battery - panasonic (with best by date of 5/2005 - so guess they were "original") Cables also sealed in packets. Can't see scratches or marks on the unit.
Anyway it was a great find - thank you
@[Deactivated]: well what can i say, ur welcome mate.. yeah a couple of my mates bought it too .. they were pretty impressed … as long as it was a good deal am happy votes dont matter ;) cheerio
HD STBs are generally better built compared to the SD counterparts. A few years back, I bought the Teac DVB-800 which is still going strong until today. You'd find better output connection on quality STB, eg. DVI/VGA out.
I did not win the Thompson unit on eBay, so I purchased the clearance Dick Smith HD unit, which my local store further discounted for me to only $65. I'm still getting used to it but although obviously a good price I don't think it is a "great" product as every so often the picture "pixulates" (is that what it is called when it goes into a bunch of little squares?), - especially when going from one commercial to the next - which are often being broadcast in different formats one the the next. Also the picture quality when in the "program guides" is poor. Oh well, at least it was cheap and it works acceptably though not impressively. Thanks for the tip "OZPETE".
Hi there,
We bought one a few years ago on ebay. It was a SUPERNET 40GB Digital something or other.
It was pretty cheap and they still look pretty cheap.
Our is one that records the shows onto the hard drive of the box thingy. 40GB records about 40 hours of TV.
Only downside is that the remote pretty much died after about 18 months, and a new one cost about $15 on ebay to replace. I must admit the baby loves the remote and it spent alot of time falling(getting thrown) off the couch.
If you type in "Supernet digital" on ebay.com.au you will find them. We bought from Ozauction broker.
This is like the one we bought (Item number 250170196574 on ebay);
