Glasses

I have private health cover (Medibank) and have a $225 limit for optical, but I also have a higher prescription (around -5) so I need to get the 'thinner' lenses that seem to cost a fortune, and so I miss out on most the great deals available.

Anyone in a similar situation, what's the best 'deal' out there for getting a decent frame + lenses with minimal out of pocket expense?

  • You don't miss out - you still get the maximum rebate, just have to contribute a bit more. Hopefully your eyes are stable and you don't need new prescriptions every year. I was -8.5 before laser!

I bought my spare pair from zennioptical.com cheap but pretty good.

I was out of pocket over $500 using my optical extras. Otherwise it would have been $800. Cost is due to high astigmatism and the use of "special" lens, blablabla.

Seriously, if you can - get the glasses done overseas. I used the same prescription, got some less expensive spectacles (Esprit vs Ralph Lauren), but only paid about RM250 in Malaysia. I've not used my optical extras ever since.

I've personally used them, so have many other OzBargainers. Free prescription lenses on genuine frames. Cheap too :)

  • Cant you buy from overseas then put in a claim , for your rebate?

  • You can't buy overseas and put in a claim. You used to be able to but the health care funds have put a stop to that. I no longer use my optical extras as I end up being out of pocket more than if I choose to do it when I am on holidays in Malaysia. Eg last trip less than Aud500 for multiifocal lenses in frames ( I'm not fussed if they are not branded but they had the springy arms) plus new lenses for both my and my husband's old glasses. Both thin plastic lenses, high quality , he has astigmatism, I don't. Ordered them and received them I thin 5 days.

I must admit thatI trust the optometrist I see as I've been getting my glasses from him for over 30 years.

    • You can still get your eyes checked, bulk billed at the local optometrist. Then take the prescription and take it to the optometrist overseas. They will still do an eye test anyway to be sure and last time I did mine, they said the readings etc were spot on.
