  • I understand that churning between gas and electricity distributors is far more common in the eastern states than in WA (where we have far fewer distributors).
To those in the East, are there hidden downsides - how likely is it that companies bait-and-switch their offers after the 2 year grace period?

  • The companies tend to revert you to the highest rate after contract period, as I found out with Origin. So if you forget to renew with a new contract, they make back all the savings you got. I would put a big notice on my fridge and call them prior to expiry, or churn on to another provider.
There is an organisation called One Big Switch that "group negotiate" some attractive deals. So it pays to keep in contact with them. They get some form of commission from the companies according to their disclosure but the deals are still much better than direct phone call negotiation to the electricity company. [I am not associated with One Big Switch, except as a subscriber to their emails.]

BTW, those 10,000 FlyBuys equates to $50 shopping credit at Coles/Target.

Been with Kleenheat for over a year. They are the first and only competitor to Alinta Gas (AFAIK). When I signed up it had a 24-month contract, but they got rid of that, even for people who had already agreed to it, which I think is decent. They no longer have contracts.
I signed up for the 10% discount, but another $50 off plus the flybuys is very worth it.

  • Sweet. Hopefully the deal is still on in ~7 weeks when I move into my new place.

    • T & C reads -
Existing Kleenheat Gas natural gas customers are not eligible for this promotion. Offer ends 13 July 2014.

I'm not an existing customer. Thnaks for the end date though, I'll be in the new place before then.

Edit: Their site lets me sign up now with a connection date later :D

Its a good deal - I took the Kleenheat $50 off (no contract) then Alinta offered me 10% off every bill for a year (no contract) so I went back. It takes very little time and effort to save :)

Alinta offered me $50 off each bill for two years or something. I did not switch back - Kleenheat deserves a customer base for introducing competition. Do you want Kleenheat to go bankrupt in two years and then pay high prices to Alinta again?

      • Somehow I don't think Kleenheat (Westfarmers) is going to go broke anytime soon. The domestic gas prices are set by the WA parliament and are the same for both Alinta and Kleenheat;

        http://alintaenergy.com.au/wa/my-house/natural-gas-pricing-f…

        http://www.kleenheatng.com.au/plans-and-pricing/tariff-and-f…

I'll go where the best deal is, I'll save my ethical spending for somewhere else.

        • Yet Kleenheat gives 10% off (your quoted prices do not include the discount). Alinta never did (and still doesn't for most). That's called competition. Without Kleenheat, I'd still be paying the standard price, and you would still be paying full-price to Alinta.

Thanks OP "winter is coming" GoT

  • Nice fine print..

    • 10% saving: 10% off the usage component of the standard tariff when selecting the Monthly Smart Saver Plan. Other terms, conditions, fees and charges apply. See turntokleenheat.com.au.
    • All it means is that you do not get 10% off the supply charge, only the gas consumption.

  • Easy process to transfer with a well laid out website. Initial experience is positive.

  • SO I changed and everything was OK.
Now Alinta are ringing me offering a better deal

$85 credit up front and $30 off per bill (quarterly bill over 2 years)

I told them if they offered this before I left I might of stayed but I am going to stick to my choice…
