A friend of mine used to work for Mars Petcare in Wodonga (PEDIGREE, WHISKAS, MyDog etc, everything sold at supermarkets)
He went through the list of ingredients one day and if you knew you wouldn't even think about feeding it to your dog.
Yeah they love it, cause it's full of lots of fillers that they love eating but aren't that good for them.

Do yourself a favour and get a decent brand (usually only sold at vets or pet stores).
Your dog will eat less, poo less, smell less and be a lot healthier.
Not sure about cats. Nobody really cares about cats.

    • Yeah that's what my vet said and I moved to buying some "Hills Science Diet" brand which our pomeranian loves and appears to be of a better quality than the Supercoat I was using before (based on the consistency of the 'output').

      • Hills and Royal Canin are generally considered as top brands when it comes to animal health with large variety of specialised diet to suit your pet's demand.

        • +4

Hills and Royal Canin are well known brands, however they are actually pretty low grade quality wise. If you read the ingredients you'll find that they are mostly full of fillers (The first three to four ingredients on the list is pretty much all you need to care about, and those two brands (as well as all supermarket dog food) are usually full of fillers such as grains, barley, oats, and corn)

You can usually find super premium dog food in pet stores (unfortunately most vets only carry Hills) Even Petbarn now stock quality food like Wellness.

Unfortunately unlike the US we have very limited premium dog food here (at nearly triple the cost, tho most of these food are Made in USA) Brands I would recommend include Artemis, Canidae and Wellness, see what brand your pet store stock, and read the ingredients yourself. Most of these food will unfortunately cost around ~$100 for a ~12kg bag, but like xordis said your dog will eat less, and potentially saving on vets bill down the track.

Your dog probably won't die from eating those low quality food, but just like a person probably won't die eating McDonald's or Mi Goreng everyday, it won't be good for them. If you think your dog is more than "just a dog" - if you treat them as part of your family, I would highly recommend getting them better quality food.

Big W Karrinyup in Perth :) $4.50 for a box of 28 doggy dental chews is a bargain, they smell minty and my dogs were gobbling them up.

        • Went to my Big W and also picked up a couple of boxes. This is obviously a price stuff up. I guess its supposed to be $14.50 coz the middle ones are on special at $15.50 and the large ones are $16.50

          You should post this bargain..

  • Hopefully includes Fish Flakes.
I feed the WOW ones to my goldfish (A pond full of them). Would be good if sister shop BigW sold them so I could stock up.

  • I'm after some rabbit litter anyone know if bigw have woodypet? Apparently is the best litter for all animals, would pick it up if half price cheers!

Does anyone know if the Trill Bird seed also includes Budgies? Mine keep kicking the seeds all over the cage floor!

Think so! There were 3 or 4 varieties available at Belmont, WA. I got cockatiel mix - didnt pay too much attention to the others, I'm sorry.

      • Thanks for the reply Miss P! I'll go check it out on the way home tomorrow :)

  • Just bought heaps of Chum wet food ($10 for 12) and a heap of Trill wild bird seed (10kg - $10)..heaps of people walking out with the clumping cat litter. Btw I went to Karingal Vic store.

  • Appears to only be the ones on the advertisement. I confirmed by both scanning and asking staff member at big w Macquarie centre today (15/5 10am).

  • I went to Big W Campsie first thing this morning for the Whiskas 6kg bag, not a single one on the empty shelf…

    bloody rubbish…

    • We called in at a BigW yesterday for marrobones…….none.

  • I also went to Macquarie Centre today - empty shelves

but finally luck - Top Ryde had about 8 of the Whiskas 6.5kg bags left, I got 4 ;)
