Building new swimming pool in Darwin, advice re 5 Star Pools

Hi all,

I'm just about to sign a contract for a new swimming pool build. The business involved has been nice so far, and we have seen their build quality (got taken on a visit to a build in progress). We've been impressed so far, but there are a lot of dollars at stake!

Before we sign I'm just making final checks re their work.

Has anyone in the Darwin area used 5 Star Pools and Spas? Any thoughts or advice re their work would be appreciated.

  • Try putting the business name into the subject of the post.

  • Hi, I put in a pool at the end of 2013. Five Star quoted on it and came in cheapest of the 3 quotes for concrete. We very nearly went with them, but after friend recommendations we went with the second cheapest. In all honesty you could buy a new car with the money you spend on a pool, but after such a sucky wet season, it was so worth it. Just make sure you have a little $$'s put aside to put in a shade.

    • Thanks for the advice.

If you don't mind me asking, did you go for the second cheapest because your friend recommended them, or did the friend recommend against 5 Star?

Agreed, a pool is an expensive investment, but I can think of nothing better than having a pool to plunge into after a hard day at work during the wet! shade is already within our budget so we're set.

Any recommendations for pool fencers or landscapers to do paving around the pool?

  • Went with the other guy because friend had a pool done by him. Havent really heard anything bad about 5 star. Bear in mind it does take some time to build, 3 months.

We bought fencing from Bunnings its the cheapest around, a fencer mate is giving us a hand to put it up, said he cant beat Bunnings price for the panels. If you want glass panels check out Mals Glass with Class.

Landscaping wise we aren't even onto that yet, just have hay spread around the edges of the pool to stop any mud splashing in there when it rains. I was looking at using a Paver & block business out in Humpty Doo.

Ask Mark who he has used in the past.

    • Thanks again for your advice.

Yes, no fencer mates for us, so we have to pay market rates. Almost fell of my chair when we got the quotes in. 19m of standard steel fencing for almost $5000…yes, I did double-check that they weren't planning to gold-plate the steel. Might check out the Mal's Glass mob you've suggested, see how they stack up pricewise, we've always liked the idea of glass panels…

      Thanks!

    • Sorry, also meant to ask….who did you end up going with, and were you happy with their work?

  • I ended up using Gumnut Pools, super happy with the result. Scott was great to deal with and always answered our calls. Like I said took 3 months to get it done, but well worth it.

Glass is expensive, Mal is straight up about that. Have a look at his FB page.

Maybe see if you can find a fencer on Gumtree who you can subbie in and you buy all the materials?
