Best travel socks - can't travel without

Hi guys,

Heading on a backpacking trip, and need to purchase some travelling socks.

Activities will include lots of walking, minimal hiking, and lots more walking.

They need to be quickdrying, and comfortable.

What have you guys used?

Tilley? Jb Expedition? Smartwool? Any others highly recommended as I want to order a few pairs.

Regards,
Movieman

  • I reckon your average bonds pair will do just fine. or theres option of holeproof explorer socks

  • wool wool wool for main socks. Most of the big brands with minimal seams are good. Darn Tough are my favourite (lifetime, yes lifetime warranty) then Smartwool/Ice Breaker brands.

In warmer places Coolmax liners/think socks are good.

Injinji and other toe socks are getting pretty popular for backpackers and climbers these days.

    • Agree x3 with the emphasis on the 'wool wool wool'.

I wear pure wool socks. They're expensive and they don't last as long as I wish they would, but in my experience only wool properly wicks away moisture from the sole of the foot. Huge contrast to cotton-based socks and they dry much faster too after being washed.

If you decide to try wool socks, but choose to go for wool-blend (I don't really how much longer they last, wear-wise), I'm guessing that the moisture-wicking effect will not be as great.

      Happy travelling.

  • I would recommend Icebreaker over Smartwool.

  • Thanks guys!

  • I usually wear some silk socks for inner and explorers for outer. never had a blister/rubbing from my good old rossi boots.

  • I've been wearing these beauties for a while. I've done a fair bit of walking/gymming/hiking in them, and they're super comfy albeit a bit thin after a year.
Don't need to spend a fortune for good socks.
