2.5" WD Portable Passport HDD 160GB - $59 @ Australia Post

410

Saw this at my post office. Not a bad deal for a quality WD product and if you want portable storage for a good price. Comes with 3 year warranty I think. Turns out cheaper per GB than the recent DSE WD 400GB deal. They also have the Maxtor variant for the same price.

Previously they had the 120GB for the same price. Happy hunting.

  • Here we go again…last time these were elusive as lockness

    • Even before the sale - few post offices stock these drives anyways. Thats probably why. I know I check around my place at 3-4 post offices, none of them stocked computer gear like this, only mobile phones.

  • Might wanna fix your link.

    • thanx man

  • I don't see it in their current online catalogue, but good find. That's not a bad price.

    • Yeah not in the catalogue but available at the clearance price countrywide where stocks are available.

  • Passport or elements? The 2.5" elements 160GB drives are still at some officeworks stores for either $59 or $69. I picked one up a while back and saw they still had some at the OW near Success, WA.

    • These are the dearer Passports, not the cheaper Elements

  • 4gb usb drive for $15. Australia post is really kicking it.

  • +1

I got one at the local Australia post business center (Milperra, NSW). They still have a few of them left.

    • Is that the one at 9 Sheridan Cl, Milperra NSW 2214?

      • +1

        Yes it is.

  • Link for catalogue - without 160 Gig but with 1T

  • McLarenMercedes,

Did you pick this up at Kingsford Post office, NSW (They had one lonely 160 HDD left)

I suspect this was clearing old stock.

    • Nah, this was a Canberra post office and they still had stock this afternoon

  • None at the PO nearest my Office (430 Collins St, Melbourne). Long gone I suspect.

  • Is it possible to remove the case and use it as an internal hard drive?

    • +1

For a laptop yes.. for a desktop, you'd need a converter cable..
How easy it is to remove the case I'm unsure..
      But why?

    • +1

Same here, I can't help but wonder WHY?

Hard drives for laptops and/or desktops are cheap. So why dismantke a perfectly good external storage?

      • It's for my xbox 360. I'm fed of of using a 20gb hard drive.

MSY, Umart etc are 40 mintues away. The post office is 2 minutes.

        • you need a very specific drive model to upgrade your 360 hard drive…
You need to do some (more) research..
only 120Gb of the new drive will be recognised..
you can buy pre-made generic brand 360 hard drives from dealextreme.com for only a bit more..

          • @ESEMCE: Buying from Dealextreme is too easy. I like to play around with things.

I pulled apart my sisters 120gb WD portable. It uses a WD1200BEAS-00URT0 which people claim is compatible. Some WD 160gb models work but are limited to 120gb.

My post office is trying to get one transferred from another store. They are hard to find in Brisbane.

            • @maf101: Why not just buy your sister a replacement drive?
Since you can only use 120Gb of it anyway..
or is that the plan with the one you've ordered?

              • @ESEMCE: My sister is a bizarre complicated individual. Hopefully she'll agree to swap.

                • +1

                  @maf101: Yup.. I think it's a genetic thing.. :-)

            • @maf101: i bought the 120 gb version last time when it was on sale for this very reason, but half way through taking out the drive i decided it would be more useful to keep it and use it to steal tv shows off friends. plus seems like a headache to get it to work on the xbox.

  • Just grab the last Maxtor 160G onetouch mini from local postoffice for $59,
comes with 5 year limited warranty. Good bargain anyway.
The WD brand is sold out in my place. I hope Maxtor is equally good.

    • They're fine, you won't be disappointed.

    • Maxtor is now owned by Seagate - and has seagate drives inside. Seagate drives have the lowest failure rate and offer 5 year warranty. No other hard drive has a 5 year warranty.

      • Seagate drives have the lowest failure rate and offer 5 year warranty. No other hard drive has a 5 year warranty.

Seagate was the first to offer a 5 year warranty if I recall correctly, but I am pretty sure all of the other brands offer at least some HDDs with the same length of coverage.

See the Western Digital warranty list for example.

  • Hmmm would make a good upgrade for my PS3…

  • God damn my local post office won't pick up their phone. All I hear is a dial up tone..who still uses THAT?

    • sounds like ur calling their fax number, or they have their fax set to auto-receive all calls as faxes.

  • +1

guys even if you find a compatible bevs hdd for a 360 it's not as simple as plug and play, hit up my site http://muppet-modding.com for more info and help on this if you like but don't just buy assuming it's easy

  • Yeah turns out I was calling their fax number, heh - my bad.

My local two post shops don't have it which is a shame (clayton and oakleigh melbourne). Gonna call the Chadstone one tommorow and see my luck.

  • Yeah went to the Kew Post Office, they stock all the other external drives except for this one. Does it actually exist?!

    • Ask them to check if any nearby stores have stock and give them the product code 84067.

  • No stock at the Perth CBD Central Post Office. They had plenty of other external drives but not these. The search continues…

  • Checked 2 Melbourne CBD stores - the A'Bekett & Melbourne GPO post offices today evening and both do not have stock.
An employee at the first store said that they had quite a few people come in and ask about it.

  • Tried 3 post offices and finally got one. It was the last one they had in that store
