are they gonna honour the orders this time?

  • I don't think I'd care about the speakers as I (and most other people) already own a pair at home and you wouldn't take speakers out with you anyway. The laptop specs seem OK except for the CPU which is apparently socket FCBGA1168, I'm guessing that's integrated which means you couldn't pull apart the laptop and upgrade it.

I'd totally get this if I needed something portable which had to rely on battery power though, it'd be perfect.

I have yet to see any laptop with upgradeable CPU

It's not that uncommon. My brothers E420 and a friends E320 have upgradable CPU's, I know cause I put the E420's cpu in the E320

I think you will find many laptops can be. For example, my i7 3610qm based Toshiba laptop uses a FCPGA988. The PGA (Pin Grid Array) means the CPU has pins on it and can be removed. BGA (Ball Grid Array) as mentioned above means it is soldered (fixed to the main board) and cannot be upgraded.
Actually, 8/10 laptops I have torn down have had replaceable CPUs, the 2 that didn't were netbooks.

      • I have yet to see any laptop with upgradeable CPU

They're been selling them for decades but increasingly RAM and CPU is being embedded for cost savings. It may also help keep them slimmer.

      • laptop cpu is upgradeable with following conditions,

        1. came with socket cpu rather than soldered.
        2. cpu is accessible through dismantling of laptop compartments.
        3. upgrading to compatible cpu (same socket type + supports same chipset)
        4. bios/mobo recognize and support the upgraded cpu

And of course, this should be done by someone who knows what he is doing because dismantling & assembling of each and every laptop is different.

In the past I've successfully upgraded my Dell Vostro 1200 cpu from
        Celeron M540 1.86ghz Single-core 1MB cache 533Mhz FSB, to
        Core2Duo T7300 2.0ghz Dual-cores 4MB cache 800Mhz FSB.
It's pretty straight-forward as the cpu compartment is easily accessible from the bottom base cover and the bios supports it straight away.
Both CPUs are on the same family of Socket-P Santa Rosa with PM/GM965 chipset.
However, the laptop failed to boot with T8100 cpu mostly due to the bios unable to recognize the new cpu model eventhough it supports the same socket and chipset.

Hmmm I though nowadays we can get i7 laptop with $500… Maybe not

  • I'm not buying another laptop unless 1080p these days. If only they honoured that last deal….

      lot of yuckiness in these

      5,400rpm drive, 1x1 wireless, 1.7ghz i3 is a bit pokey

add to that award winning lenovo support (not)

A little on the low end spec, but this seems reasonable for a Lenovo (on the promise of superior to Acer/HP/Compaq/Dell quality). I don't need one at the moment, but if the RAM is upgradable and you are willing to slap in a bigger HDD you should be very happy.

You don't normally see a Core i3-4005U for this price. I can't speak much about the rest of the machine or its reliability (or lack of), but this price is good. The rest of the specs are fine for 99.9% of computer users and typical for this price.

  • only 11 left….

It's not bad, but for the same price ($499 after $79 cashback) you can get an Acer with an i5 from MSY (and other places). They have an ultraportable model and a heavier one with HD4400 graphics. Pretty much the same spec, except a better CPU.

Most peoples do care about quality, I won't recommend anyone to buy Acer even it's half price.

      • They used to be quite bad, I agree. But I think the most common laptop brands are pretty much on par nowadays in terms of reliability. For the price, I think it is good value. You can buy an extra year warranty for $9, which is not bad.

      • +1

Every brand has a low end "plastic crap" range. I'd be surprised if the Lenovo bottom end quality is better than the Acer bottom end.

    • yeah I looked at that Acer in MSY yesterday. Not sure what to buy now.

      • are you talking about the acer i5 sleek book for 499 after cashback?

  • $469 with employee discount (ibm included)

  • Got 1. Thanks op.

Yesterday there were 8 left, Now showing 16 so stock should not be a problem hopefully.
