Would different firmware improve the Huawei Ascend Mate?

Hi all,

Here's the story: my teen has just turned 15 & I want her to have a decent phone. Nothing extraordinary, just decent cameras, mSD slot, & 1GB RAM minimum. I don't want to spend too much- because I don't know if it'll get lost or stolen/broken quickly (her first).

So, I thought of getting something new for me & passing her the nice ($99) Huawei 526G I got from the DSE sale not long ago. That way, if it goes missing, I've only lost $99.

I found a rather large (okay, because my eyes suck- lol) Huawei Ascend Mate.

The outright price is $320. A bit small on the internal storage (8GB, like the 526G) but what concerned me were some reports it was saddled with poor system/software which affected overall performance considering the specs.

I'm here to get opinions from the experts on firmware flashing/rooting & if this is a phone that responds well to this.

Actually, all ideas & opinions welcome- especially if you're an owner!

Cheers :)

  • Likely yes for several reasons:
    - no undesired bloatware
    - custom rom author may have various bug fixes and optimisations
    - apps like greenify which work best with root

    But there are downsides:
    - if you wait a while to "see how it goes" before you decide to root/flash, you'll need to wipe everything and backup/restore on Android takes a little time.
    - fixing some old bugs can introduce new ones, e.g. on my last rom I couldn't send or receive MMS

Once you start be prepared to go through 2-3 different roms before settling on one you like, unless of course you get lucky!

    Have fun ;)

  • Thanks…yeah, I know about the pitfalls any time you decide to toss caution to the wind. But, this is more than just rooting it for the sheer fun- it seems a very nice mobile & I cannot understand them cobbling it in this way? Isn't the idiotic 8GB internal storage bad enough? I just don't get putting in a quad-core & 2GB RAM & then cr*pping on it's ability to perform?

Anywho- input appreciated- thanks again. Maybe I'll get lucky & an actual owner will pop their head in to relate the actual performance for everyday use.

    Cheers
