  • why not get a power pack on amazon for $50?

    • There could be a few reasons, I’d say primarily because it doesn’t include the quick charger. Or I can't see any of the packs that do.

  • +5

How long is the warranty on the fair maidens?

    • +8

As long as their virtue is intact

  • +5

"Who also hang about and assist you with your first charge cycle" hahahahhaha

    • +14

Just a shame it's the quick charger

    • +3

      Better than first discharge…

      Sorry, I'll let myself out.

  • +1

The charger will be good for the same type of batteries from other brands right? Sacrilege here I know.

    • no

      • Thanks for replying but huh? Why would it be bad to charge other NiMH brand batteries?

        • +1

          Of course you can.
Other guy is either ignorant or messing about.

        • +1

High King Tightarse and samlor, sorry for late response.

Total opposite mates, my response is short because I don't have time for repeating information already available rather than being ignorant or messing about.

Eneloop charges are specifically designed to work against the chemistry of the Eneloop batteries (voltage charge curve). The cutoff point in charging is engineered into the battery design, not like the generic chargers or general purpose ones like the La Crosse.

If you use other batteries in it the unit would have fall back to its fail safe cutoff which means they'd still get overcharged.

That means it would work like an ordinary cheap quick charger and basically overcharge and decrease the life of non-Eneloop batteries.

So technically it might "work" for other batteries it would be BETTER to go with the cheaper slow charger version which won't heat and damage them as much, or fork out for the La Crosse.

Hope that clears it up for you, if not read my previous posts and search for the technical review of this charger online.

And Tightarse.. please be less rude next time. We're trying to help here.

  • How does this charger compare to the La Crosse BC-700? My BC-700 died on me a few days ago (after 18 months of use) and I need a new charger; I'm pretty reluctant to go with another BC-700.

    • +1

The La Crosse charger has 4 modes. Charge, Discharge, Refresh, and Test.
This just has charge and no fancy LCD screens.

I also can't see any $76 shipping options with the La Crosse charger, sadly the most i could pay was $38 for shipping.

This http://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10001890/1136300-authenti… is a cheap but worthy smart charger from Panasonic and will correctly terminate your Enloops' charge cycle (as opposed to a dumb charger that will terminate your Eneloops)

      • That looks quite cheap. So does this trickle charge if constantly plugged in after the charge cycle finished? How long would it take to charge eneloops from empty? Can it charge batteries in multiples of one?

Would I just need to buy an AUD plug power cable for this?

Is this the cheapest place to buy?

Any other good smart chargers around this price?

  • It's delivered to you in a monster truck. Totally worth the $76.

  • Is this charger a smart charger? I find it so hard to find specs on it. I know the basic charger can overcharge batteries as it's merely timer based.

This one also states "protection timer 270 minutes" - what does that mean?

Will this charger charge the batteries until they're full, then trickle charge? Will it overcharge batteries, or once they're full does it just cut out?

If it is a smart charger, then why does it have a protection timer? Surely the charger can tell if batteries are full then trickle charge as necessary.

    • Shame that link no longer works. From memory this fast charger has much better battery protection. The slow charger just has a heat cut-off and works on a timer, making it very easy to overcharge. This one is a smart charger, detects voltage, stops when the batteries are full and has individual channels.

      • +1

Archived version of your link here. Your memory seems to be correct :)

        • good work, I couldn't find an archived version. I'll update the post.

          thanks

Protection timer is for faulty batteries. Manufacturer sells both charger and batteries, hence knows if a battery is charging for 270 minutes then it's faulty.

Also try selling a customer over current, thermal and voltage protection. They won't care or tell you they already have that in their powerboard or computer.

  • i dont care if it charges fast or not.
but i need to charge single or 3 batteries sometimes!

  • This has been the Masters price for a while now… I bought some a few weeks back using the 15% OFF code (BWS15 & PET15)! Not sure if this is a long term special or their standard pricing now???

    • standard pricing for many months now…

  • Looks like a good deal, unfortunately no discharge function…

The NC-MQR06W is an intelligent smart charger.

The microprocessor monitors each and every battery individually, so it's really dumb proof. You just put whatever type of NiMH battery into the charger and it will deal with it. So it doesn't matter if you charge 1 or 2 or 4 cells at one time.

    Discharge
You do not need discharge function. Performing a full cycle shortens battery life. I would rather do thousands of shallow charge/discharge rather than wait till it's empty. Keep your battery around 40-90% capacity it will be happy and live longer. NiMH die quickly if they are over discharged constantly. Discharge function only good for cycling older cells. I haven't seen the need to break-in aged Eneloops. They perform well during their service life. If you need to profile a cell capacity then discharge function is useful provided you have a LCD for data display.

    Trickle Charging
You do not need trickle charging. Once the charger detects the end of charge, the battery is very close to full. Trickle charging is only useful when balancing a large string of serially connected cells. Tricking charging current is small enough to balance cells without causing much damage. Eneloops self discharge is low enough it does not need to be top up regularly.

    2 Hour Quick Charger
This is not entirely correct. 2 Hour charging only applies to 2 cells. For 3-4 Eneloop 2000mAh cells, it takes 220 Minutes.

Charging one Eneloop cell takes only 75 Minutes. A little over an hour.

Any less than 1 Hour is STUPID because charging NiMH is rather inefficient therefore it generates a lot of heat as waste electricity. This cooks your cells and it's damaging. 2 Hour is a good balance for this size charger where the cells are very close together and there is only passive cooling. For larger charger like the MAHA C9000, there is adequate spacing between each cells so there is slightly better cooling.

    The charging rate as follows
    1x AA - 1680mA
    2x AA - 1120mA
    3/4x AA - 560mA

    1x AAA - 840mA
    2x AAA - 560mA
    3/4x AAA - 280mA

    270 minutes timer
Sometimes some cheap/old NiMH with high internal resistance don't play well with negative delta V so the timer is there to stop overcharging, else leads to fire. Think of this as a fail safe timer or a safety backup. Please note, this timer is not long enough to charge bigger capacity cells like 4x 2700mA, takes roughly 300 minutes. Can be worked out by charging them in pairs but troublesome.

Old cells that do not charge well can be still used in TV remotes and clocks but I would time the charging instead of automatic and inspect regularly for leaking cells as this can corrode metal contacts. That's the time to recycle them at your local Officeworks.

    ffs eneloops again.

  • I thought I'd buy this one, but it's only available for collection in Chullora or via the $76 truck delivery. No post option available. :(

    • That sucks. Let me know how you get on with the maidens

    • Yeah, think of the maidens :-) but seriously, I've been considering buying it from Chullora (closest Masters to me) myself but can't find any current promo codes. Maybe I could post one to where you are located? Wanna work something out?

    • +1

Chullora is their websites default pick up store. Add it to your basket and on checkout you can click the 'change' button to your location!!!
Edit: Oh, & if you're not in a hurry, this seems to be standard pricing for a while now so I'd probably wait for another 15% OFF code (or similar deal) to come through!

  • Order one yesterday for collect but got a call this morning from a company on behalf of Master telling me that theyre out of stock. What suprises me is how a third party get hold of my contact detail. I thought I'm buying from Master. Anyway how can theyre out of stock while the store which I ordered from and some other Masters stores clearly state that its In Stock?.

    • Their so called computerised stock database is useless. I went in to a store knowing that they have stock showing online and went home empty handed. Piss the hell out of me, next time I'll call and make those bored looking idling staff run a live stock check.

  • Bought the last one on the shelf from Dandenong South, Vic, store on saturday.
Charger comes with 4 AA batteries. So its actually not a bad deal!

  • can you also charge AAA batteries with this charger?

    • Charges 1-4 AA /AAA NiMH cells

  • +1

Thanks OP! $25.64 for me :) Used 10% discount code https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/147841 and bought a Wish Card using ING paywave.

  • hey I'm about to order my first ever envelops from ozbargain…. but I'm curious, why doesn't this have more up votes? have there been better deals before?

    • Sometimes… But if you do a quick search you'll see that lately there's a new eneloop deal evry other week!
If you do order online, don't forget to use the GROCERY10 10% off code!

  • I think it is because most Masters is only WA apart one store in Victoria.

    • +1

Not quite sure what you mean by this comment???
Victoria has more Masters stores than any other state!!! VIC 17 - QLD 12 - NSW 10 - WA 7 - SA 1 - ACT 1. And by the time I've finished typing this, they've probably opened another!!!

      • I doubt they are going to build more stores they are not doing very well. Looking pretty desperate now. With all the sale going on but mostly out of stock for months. I don't see much truck delivery going on. Unless they do it in the middle of the night when not one employee is around.

    • +1

Err… nope they're in NSW also.

      • I stand corrected :) I misinterpreted the store search results on the Masters website.
