  • Do you mount your phone on the dash or something for this?

  • full HD files are gonna hurt your storage…..

  • A $30 dedicated dash cam is well worth the investment instead of screwing around with a bulky phone IMO.

    • I disagree - a $30 dedicated dash cam will be a piece of rubbish that won't work properly, if at all. I've played with cheap dash cams and given up on them. They all have extremely poor video quality, some melt in the sun, some turn off at unexpected times and don't record incidents (happened to me twice where despite having a camera with the recording light on, an important event was not recorded) or corrupt videos at random. Some cheap ones also save in unsupported video formats that require converting with dodgy proprietary software. No $30 dash cam will have GPS.

If you have an old half-decent mobile phone and a car charger, you already have better hardware than a cheap dash cam, probably with GPS. If you park the car close to your house you also have the ability to upload video via WiFi without removing the camera or memory card from the car. Add a cheap SIM card and you also have GPS tracking.

I know a couple of people who bought sub-$100 Android phones to use as dash-cams. They also have front and rear cameras so if the software allows it and the phone is fast enough, front and back images can be recorded. They can log on to their phone from the driveway and view footage of their track days.

Also most car dash cameras are far bigger than what you call 'bulky' mobile phones! The smallest most expensive dash cam I tested(which turned out to also be a piece of rubbish despite costing nearly $90) was slightly larger than my largest Android mobile.

i've invested $500 into a Blackvue front and back camera with the ability to record while the car is parked. Saved me heaps in the long run due to people not leaving notes when hitting my car

  • yes you mount your phone on the dash.

  • Autoboy Blackbox or DailyRoads Voyager? anyone tried both?

    • Tried DailyRoads Voyager on an old Motorola defy some time back. It was better than the $130 dash cam on my car. Phone heated up a bit more than usual.
