Optus 4G Prepaid $2 Days: 500MB Data, Unlimited Calls and Text

172

Seems like a good deal just for the data alone.

Also great for those occasional users who use their phone when needed.

Unlimited Calls/text/MMS and a generous 500Mb Data for $2 per day.

If you use above your massive 500MB daily limit, you will only pay an extra $2 for another 500MB

Best Value Recharge seems to be $100 for 100 days (just over 3 months) and if u recharge before the expiry date, credit rolls over.

  • $2 per day, one month $2 x 30 = $60 ….?

    • +5

i did mention that this is good for occasional users like my grandpa

      • +1

If you accidentally turn on auto sync, it is charged $2 for a day. Not quite sure it is good deal.

        • +2

Even though my grandpa has dementia , he remembers to turn his mobile data off . Then occasionally likes to check his Facebook so he turns data back on. He mostly receives calls and rarely makes them so this suits him well.

  • What do "days of use" and "Lasts for" mean?

    • +4

Basically you get charged $2 for the days you use the service. Meaning that it would be triggered by you making a call or sending a sms or checking your facebook. In that case $2 will automatically be deducted and you would have unlimited calls/text and 500Mb data for that day.

If next day, you didn't use your phone , you wont be charged anything

      • -4

Nowaday all smart phones check email/facebook/twitter regularly and most people don't know/care to turn off the data when not in use. Unless your grandpa is not using smart phone, he will still pay $60/$62 a month for making a couple calls during the weekend.

        • +6

Just because you don't know how to do something on your own phone doesn't mean its the ops problem

    • for example, $30 recharge will expire in 30 days but you have 15 days of use because they charge $2 per day

  • Possible to use this with ipads?

    • +3

      yes

      • thanks mate. now i have to find somewhere (need it urgently for tomorrow) that sells the sim cards for $2, where i can activate it on the spot too.

  • Does the 500GB lapse if not used? If so does that imply you need consistent 500MB a day usage to get the 15GB/30days? Was reviewing this against the $40/12GB pm Virgin plan : https://www.virginmobile.com.au/mobile-broadband-plans .

    • +2

No, data does not roll over each day, it is just 500mb per day. Any unused data is lost, but if you go over 500mb in one day, you get charged an extra $2 for that day but are given an extra 500mb, so it would mean $4 for 1gb that day.

It still works out to be $60/15gb/30days (with max 500mb a day).

      • +1

I see, the max is 15GB in 30 days if use it consistently to 500MB/day. Means no end-of-month downloads to use up the extra remaining quote. imho the 12GB/$40pm virgin deal is better if just after 3G data.

      • These are just the normal parameters for the Optus 4G $2 Days plan and not a new deal/bargain as such. May suit your needs, however.

I'm on the 3G $2 Days (genuine unlimited data, text/calls). It has been closed to new signups since October last year.
This plan - 4G, but with a 500MB daily limit + 500MB more (max extra in a 24hr period for an extra $2) - has been the only option available since then.

  • +1

In that case have to make sure turn off the phone if not use from that day otherwise you don't know what your smart phone will do.

    • +2

You only need to turn off mobile data on your phone - before midnight.

You can still receive calls the next day - just don't do anything else or you'll lose another $2 off your balance.
Do actually turn off the data, though. 'Restrict Background Data' setting isn't enough to stop some data exchange with the network - and even the smidge involved there is enough.

      • Will you be charged if someone sends you an SMS?

        • No, that's ok.

        • +1

you will be charged for MMS though. It uses data.

        • +1

I presume, though, that an undelivered MMS will get stored in the system and be delivered when mobile data is turned back on?

        • Yep i turn my data off and MMS won't come thru till it is turned on.
(the message actually arrives like a normal txt but you cant see the message/pic)

  • 10% bonus credit if you purchase at Woolworths.

  • +1

I got $2 a day for 3G unlimited data, sms and call but Optus no longer has this plan

    • Unlimited data where the Craptus network can't provide dial up speeds in the evenings.

  • Yeah $10 recharge lasts 10 days with 5 days usage. It would be better if you could just use $2 for 1 day out of the month if thats all you needed without having to pay $10.

  • +1

I think that this deal has been running for a long time nothing special really

  • would this function with one of those pocket wifis?

    • Yes - as long as it's not locked to another network.

  • -2

This used to be unlimited data every day, then it dropped to 1gb per day now it has dropped again to 500mb. Sucks.

Oh and yes, this can be used with a pocket WiFi.

    • You are negging this 4G deal because a now unavailable 3G deal was better???

      • That deal was 4G. I begged it because its infinitely poorer deal now.

        • Disappointing - yes, but still not a valid basis for negging, based on an unavailable deal was better. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

Otherwise a lot of OB deals would be negged purely because previous price/features/etc were better despite now unavailable.

Did you negged or begged - bloody spell-checkers ;-)

        • +1

I'm basing it on Optus have nerfed the deal, no offence to OP. I'll beg him to not be offended by the neg ;)

  • +2

I currently pay $50 for 3.8Gb and $950 worth of calls with Telstra, so for a little extra, this deal appeals to me as some months that 3.8Gb only lasts me a couple weeks.

Time to jump ship I think.

    • Which plan is this? I pay $79/m with $450 calls, unlimited SMS and 3.5gb data.

      • +1

        @ Damonator84
Telstra Prepaid Encore…buying data packs ;)

      • +1

Prepaid. For more info check out whirlpool.

  • So how does one turn off all data? Samsung galaxy..

    Is there one setting?

    • +5

Yes. It is called turn mobile data off.

  • +1

I go away for work and twice a week I would love to have some cheap internet. This would be a perfect plan because. Some hotels I stay at have great wifi, Others don't and I could use it then, Sometimes it's weeks before I go away. Better then paying $15 with telstra for an extra gig.
When I only use it 4-5 times a month and alot more data.

  • +1

This is not a deal it's the standard price and unlimited calls/text.

    • +1

agreed, this offer has been available for a while

  • +1

this is the best deal I find. im on with "tas" I have unlimited everything…. I do wat ever I want on my phone and costs me $60 a month… this plan how ever is close…. who really uses 500mb a day… maybe youtube. but limit it… simple… use wifi or restrain. I compare this to normal phone plans… u go over and ur rooted next min u have a $600 phone bill… thats close to a yr worth of this plan. and if u go over 500mb then an extra $2 not $50 on other phone plans… this is 4g optus… yeah not as good as telstra coverage. but thats up to the individual. plus u go away n need to hotspot ur laptop well no need for usb internet stick. recharge etc. just use ur phone… I been on my plan since it come out…. never had a problem unless its my phone. and never had an absorbent phone bill. therefore I buy my phone outright and im still ahead. no lock ins. done.. thats my 2cents now back to $2. enjoy

  • +4

in addition.. recharge at a petrol station and get an extra 4cents off fuel

  • Does this allow tethering?
And how is Optus' coverage etc these days as compared to Telstra?

    • That's the only thing holding me back.. Optus coverage and 4g compared to Telstra 4g and data speed…

      • While it will recede to 3G, quality remains a concern in the evening. Add in forced disconnects if it's a USB stick, instead of mobile - hotspot tethering.

I get good reception using Telstra, VF + O, Optus. But connection continuity only from the former two; which as an aside, bill accurately, in kB.

  • +1

Optus coverage is not that good. If you don't get 4G, their 3G is bad. In perth CBD, there's a tower that's over congested and you can hardly use it at all. I won't be using optus for mobile broadband.

  • Anyone know if its possible to transfer credit from a the Long expiry cap to this one?
Or any way to transfer to this without losing the $80+ credit in the account?

    • The transferring of prepaid credit is certainly allowed.
I had to port the number onto a new sim in my circumstance, but they transferred the credit onto the new account without drama.

      • Visited an Optus store today and asked a staff. You can change your plan, however any existing credit on the long expiry plan will disappear and you will have to recharge $30 again.

My guess is that this isnt just limited to the long expiry plan, but applies to other prepaid plans, so check instore first before making assumptions so you dont lose all your money!

        • Worst thing that you can do with issues like this is try to do anything - or obtain advice about anything related to it - via an Optus store.

As long as the credit is prepaid phone credit and not credit associated with any other Optus service, it can be transferred.

Ring. If you happen to encounter someone as 'helpful' as the person you encountered instore, ring back and speak to someone else. Don't accept 'no' for an answer.

Both customer service reps I spoke to in the process of enquiring and then actually doing the transfer of the old credit acknowledged that it was fine. I have a very deep voice, but I didn't frighten or intimidate them into doing it. Just be straightforward, convey a clear impression that you know it to be feasible, and, again, don't accept 'no' for an answer.

  • For anybody above who has referenced wi-fi modem use and tethering.
They were/are against the T's and C's of the 3G $2 Days plan, and even with the daily data restriction, I'm guessing the 4G as well.

At your own risk. Even with the technical difficulties of tether-tracking (from an Android phone hotspot anyway), they may end up siting you on some separate breach of their fair-use policy, so you might still get turfed off.

Back when I was reading the $2 3G plan threads on Whirlpool, that was actually happening to some people. I just made a conscious decision then to not be one of them.

I wanted backup mobile data access (two different telcos/networks), so despite the overall cost, that's what I use.

    • How would the carrier know if the SIM in use is being used through tethering? Is there signature/information stored of the Tx device in the outgoing data packet (which they can then read once it reaches their servers)?

      • Your hotspot has to do NAT and if it hasn't taken some countermeasures it is sometimes possible to detect tethering by the lower TTL of the IP packet that comes from a tethered device.

  • +2

I don't see the deal here? This is just regular Optus pre-paid pricing. The only thing new about this deal is a lower data allowance than when I was using it around 6 months ago. Most annoying part (and main reason I ported to Telstra pre-paid) is that when you go over the daily limit it's $2 to reset the data usage for that day, but you can only do it once. Then data simply doesn't work for the rest of the day. Caught me a few times when tethering where I ended up needing to use Maccas wifi because I couldn't rely on data from my phone.

  • How long can the number stay alive if i dont keep using it?

    • +1

Optus SIM death was/probably still is 6 months from credit expiry.

  • Smart that you can't bankrupt yourself if you're diabled/elderly. Also sharper value than the Boost / Aldi options, for the non-yappers in the family. 6 Gig a month isn't inconceivable.

  • +1

Who still have the 3G plan of it? If you don't use anymore, could you pls transfer it to me? Many thanks:)
