Cheap Gaming Headset < $30, any ideas?

I'm looking for a budget headset for light gaming. Any ideas? Has anyone got any personal experience on any cheap ones that aren't too uncomfortable to wear over long periods? And have ok sound and mic quality? Been looking for a while now, and i keep missing out on the ones that are on special :/

Anything with "gaming" in the title will cost more then $30, with the exception of the Zalman one from Mwave (excl. delivery of course)

I remember you were asking about 5.1 headsets before, if you don't need 5.1 just get whatever headset thats cheap… if you want SQ then get a good headphone with a clipon mic. Also you should of just updated your other post

    • Yeah i was going to but i changed my requirements so I made a new one.

    • are these well worth spending the extra money on? I never used to do much gaming but my mates are dragging me into FPS gaming. Do these have like directional sound so you can tell where the baddies are coming from?

  • What are you playing on? If it's a console you may need certain kinds of headsets that work with it. I'm not 100% sure if they work with just anything.

If it's a PC, then you may be better suited to a separate headphone/microphone combo. So called 'gaming' headsets are always pretty bad, I haven't ever really heard one that sounds any good. The whole 5.1/7.1 headset thing is a gimmick (They called them virtual surround, which basically means it uses a regular 2 speakers and a few effects added on top).

The Zalman Microphone ZM-MIC 1 is a fantastic standalone microphone that can be placed either on a desk/table in front of you or added to a headphone. It sounds great, don't be fooled by the price, I've heard ones much more expensive sound worse when gaming.

If you can afford it, then go for a decent pair of headphones to go with it. I use the Audio Technica AD-700's, which are fantastic and have a very wide soundstage (which is what makes them good for 'directional sound' so you can tell where the baddies are coming from. They can cost around $100+ dollars, so if you wanted something good for less you could find a pair of lesser Audio Technica's, or perhaps some Sennheiser headphones and pair them with the Zalman mic.

Honestly, for $30 you're not going to get anything entertaining as far as sound goes. If you're in that price range, you're going to be limited to some really average-sounding pairs. It depends what you want out of the experience. If you want something to get the job done, just buy the Zalman mic and a cheap pair of headphones from your local store, but if you want something that will entertain you and give you clear, bassy or accurate sound, then you will have to go higher in your budget.

If buying a headphone/mic seperately isn't possible (due to consoles or personal preference) then any of the lower-end gaming headsets will probably be pretty similar. Even the expensive Plantronics or Logitech ones barely compare quality-wise to a decent mic/headphone combo. The Plantronics GameCom 777 may be your best choice for a cheap, combined set, as BakedPete above stated.

    • Cheers for the detailed reply, very helpful info. At this stage I'm thinking about paying a little extra and getting that Plantronics 777, but I'll decide tomorrow.

  • I personally love my Turtle Beach Earforce X11 which is now replaced by the X12.

I get called a waller or hacker sometimes because I pre shoot around corners. It's because I can hear someone running or reloading with those bad boys. And everyone can hear me clearly with the mic.

I wouldn'r recommend the Plantronics 777. I had a mate who got them and then sold them in a week.

Or the Steel Series Siberia V2. Had those before the X11 and I loved them, but it had bad wiring and eventually died. Now that's not why I wouldn't get them. I thought the sound quality was great with the Siberia but the X11 is twice as good as the Siberia in my opinion.
