So why is this a valid neg vote?

      • it's retail price set by Sony, so it shouldn't even be a bargain.

        • +1

Doesn't seem like a legit reason to neg though…
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

        • +12

Who said retail price can't be a bargain?

        • +15

If the competition is $859-899 and this is $769 then in my book it's a bargain, retail or not.

Add to that, this is local stock vs grey import carrying additional advantages.

Can you match or beat this price elsewhere? If not, you have your answer.

    • +7

According to OP (I haven't looked at all competitor prices), it's cheaper than the competitors? And by a considerable margin.

    • +1

cheapest price for any stock, oz or grey. How is it not a bargain?

Just because the manufacturer sells it? Bargains are based on price, value and risk… please hand back your ozb creds :)

      • +1

I am not interested in this phone but I am interested in this discussion on how RRP is still considered a bargain. So are others selling this phone way above RRP to make this RRP deal a bargain?

Just curious and not something we see everyday.

  • +9

Nice price compare to Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8.

    Main specs for Xperia Z2:

Good price, great phone. using one right now!

    • +3

      Also, just for reference..

It seems the Australian version of the phone (from sony.com.au) only includes the standard headset.

Mine was purchased overseas and as part of the package, it includes the premium noise cancelling earphones as well as the charging dock. These two alone are worth $100+.

The ones from Mobicity/Kogan/etc. may be include the extracts, hence the price difference.

      • What's in the box
        Sony Xperia Z2 4G LTE D6503 (16GB, Black)
        USB Cable
        Charger
        Generic AU Plug Adapter

Kogan one doesn't even seem to include headset.

The Mobicity one does come with a portable speaker and noise cancelling earphone, but they cost $150 more. I dont value the portable speaker and earphone to be $150. The speaker is more like $80 and the earphone $50.

      • Remember to do the maths though, if you were to buy from Sony Australia then purchase the extras.

It would come close to the grey stock, but you get Sony Australia warranty for all items, not some generic overseas warranty.

  • +4

The prices from Mobicity and Kogan quoted above are grey stock whilst Sony AU is selling local stock.

Never the less this is the RRP Sony have set in Australia.

    • +4

Lol….. negged for what? Pointing out the facts?

      • +2

        Probably hurt fanbois feelings.

    • Both of your points have been pointed out in the original post.

      • -5

So that doesn't mean it justfies being negged….. how childish.

        • -3

          Child negs when negged

    3Gb RAM??

    • Thats right!

      Yep, it is 3GB RAM

      • +3

How much RAM does this phone have?

        • +3

How much RAM does this phone have?

          3

        • +4

          3 RAM?? WOW… That's quite a step backwards…

        • -2

          3 RAMMMMMMMMM
          OVER 9000000000

        • But just answer the question! How much RAM does it have ??!

        • +6

What was that post where the dude said something had like 16 cores? This phone has 3 rams and a 5 1/4 SD slot.

        • +2

Can this phone run crysis or battlefield ? Thx

        • Assuming you aren't trolling/being sarky perhaps you assumed this is referring NAND memory rather than system RAM?

  • I bought it instore at a sony centre, still no stock date yet :(
seems like it would be faster to order from them online than instore, so very dissapointed.

  • so are they available to be picked up then?

  • Does the Z2 have that feature where you can charge it by sitting it on a charging pad? (whatever that's called!?)

    • Wireless charging. And no, the Z2 doesn't have it inbuilt.

      • Thats strange, Sony is releasing a car headunit that has a clamp for a phone which charges the phone wirelessly (if the phone supports it). I was going to buy it when it comes out and a sony phone to use with it:

        http://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/in-car-receivers-players/x…

Which flagship devices do come with wireless charging?

        • +3

Apparently they're releasing some accessories (like the power cradle case things from years ago) that allow for wireless charging. Source. Not sure if they'll be worthwhile, however

          As for other flagships:

          • The Galaxy S5 doesn't have it inbuilt. Requires a specific case to allow it. Same with the Note 3 and Galaxy S4.

          • Neither the HTC One M7 or M8 have it. A cursory search doesn't yield much in the way of aftermarket accessories to allow for it.

          • The Nexus 5 and Nexus 4 do have it inbuilt.

          • LG G2 doesn't (Verizon exclusive feature… ugh) have it inbuilt.

          • iPhone 5S doesn't have it.

          • Moto X doesn't have it.

          • Most, if not all, of Nokia high end Windows Phones have it inbuilt, I think.

So basically, Nexus 5 or Nokia WP for inbuilt. With Samsung's it's not so bad, as you're just replacing the back cover, but with any other aftermarket options, they'll have to be full on cases to accommodate the charging coil.

        • -1

Thanks for the info, I have the original HTC One.. Wireless charging is a must have for my next phone but the Nexus 5 isn't enough of an improvement so looks like Im waiting for the next round of flagships.

        • +1

Doesn't look like that car cradle has wireless charging (aka Qi) either. It just says NFC which would be for hands free and music. Maybe it charges the Z2 using its magnetic side charge port (http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/r/s/728x/assets/images/phpn6vtch.…) when you clamp it into place?

Edit - Yup this video says it uses the magnetic side charge port http://youtu.be/o1pFq4-jc7c

        • Thanks for the info. That makes it a bit crap then since it will only charge a sony phone, any other phone would need to have a cable plugged in.

    • Sony does have an official desktop magnetic charging dock. I think only the Taiwanese version comes with it as standard (along with the noise canceling earphones).

    • It has a small dock that has a magnetic charger port thingy. The phone has this matching charging port on the side just like the z1 and my original z. They work great, not only charge but you can program actions for what the phone should do. Say something like turn alarm on, display photos, start music play tc.
Connects a bit like and apple mag charge on a MacBook, just pop it on and it connects no hassle of lining it up or plugging a micro USB in.

  • I just tried to order and the summary is below:

    Subtotal: $ 759.00
    Delivery charge: $ 9.95
    Delivery discount: - $ 9.95

    Estimated total: $ 759.00

    You have saved: $ 9.95

        • What? how to become a sony member?

        • Look at the comments one post down…

  • +8

    It's $637.58 delivered for Sony X members.

    • wow really? could the public get sony X member price as well? or are there any ways to get it with that price? really want to buy this phone.

      • No, you would have to go through a friend.

        • dang..I wonder if there's sony x member here? :p haha thanks btw

        • +1

          Obviously Unity1 is one..
Else he wouldn't be able to see the Sony X price.

P.s. Thanks Unity1 for the heads up, grabbing one tonight :)

        • Did you just become a member? Share the love? :)

        • I somehow get the Sony X promotion email, but when i tried to login, it keeps saying like expired URL or sth like that. Not sure I am registered member or not. Or maybe everyone can receive the promotion email?

        • If you have received the promotional email, go to the sonyx facebook page and ask to see if you're actually a member or not :)

        • that's actually a good idea. haha. thanks!

        • wants the love as well here :)

        • I am! :P

    • +1

Now that would be a real bargain.

    • +3

thanks for the tip :) always forget about sony x

  • +1

Consider that Sony is starting 6 month release cycles. If you resell your phone to fund the newest model, in two years time your Z2 will be four generations old.

    • I doubt that 6 monthly upgrade cycles for Sony will be a trend. Since the Xperia S, Sony have always been a bit out of kilter vis-a-vis its major competitors (Samsung, HTC) when releasing its new flagships.

The Xperia S came out ~6 months before the Galaxy S3 and HTC One X, and suffered from an older chipset and was stuck on android 2.3 for ages.

The Xperia Z came out ~6 months before the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, and suffered from a poorer screen and, again, an old-gen chipset.

The Xperia Z1 came out ~6 months before the Galaxy S5 and HTC One (Mate), although to be honest, it isn't lacking in any significant way compared to those two models (although it again has an older chipset than both).

The Xperia Z2 now aligns perfectly against the Galaxy S5 and HTC One (Mate). I suspect we will see Sony revert to 12 month upgrade cycles from here on in. Their 'experiment' with releasing flagships 6 months before its major competitors has proven to be more detrimental than beneficial (since buyers of flagship phones always want "the very best" available).

      • +2

I suspect we will see Sony revert to 12 month upgrade cycles from here on in.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. A 6 month release period allows them to compete with both the HTC/Samsung flagship release, and the new iPhone release in September.

        • -2

Rumors from multiple sources says the new iphone will be well before September (possibly this month).
Yes I release they are only rumors but there is nothing official about September anyway

  • +6

Not a bad price considering all other flagships are $850+

    • I doubt too many people are paying $850+ on ozbargain though.

I basically said the same thing as you that its good value compared to other flagships, but my comment was negged the hell out of. Can't please some people. Will the next sony deal that is $10 cheaper than rrp get 100 pluses?

      • +8

        This is awkward…

        hides outright s5

      • The problem is you said this isn't a bargain.

I'm open minded about this. I'm stating the facts that the cost of other flagships are higher. Whether this is a bargain is up to individuals

  • -5

    OzRRP

    • +1

Its the cheapest price in Australia by a fair amount so well worth the listing.

      http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=Sony%20Xper…

      • -5

So going by your logic you list every product that is released new at rrp if its the cheapest in Australia? lol Ozbargain isn't really for rrp, but you can pay rrp like other suckers.

        • +9

Is $759 the RRP? What does the RRP matter anyway? The price is price and in this case its the cheapest around.

        • I could understand people saying this a bargain if the price won't be beaten in the near future like the n5. You can guarantee this price will be bettered within the next week or so and probably by $50 or more.. So yeah if you willing to pay the early adopters tax than good for you, but hardly see that making it a deal..

        • -1

So what? You've only got a valid point if you can beat the price now.

        • Deals in the past have been allowed to be negged on the basis of rrp, and they were better than this deal.

If you think this is such a good deal why not plus it?

    • +6

It is currently the cheapest until Telstra comes out with their outright price of $672 in 2 weeks. Currently Optus has it for $869.

      • +1

Telstra being the cheapest? Where's this news from?

        • +2

Check the Z2 thread on whirlpool, particularly posts by CrazyCS.

        • +1

From some unknown source, claimed by Crazy CS from whirlpool which I highly suspect is the same guy here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/1989
          http://whrl.pl/RdXAtd
Ironically, he has S5 as his whirlpool quip.
Not sure where he got the $672 Telstra Outright Price, especially when he himself says there are two of his workmates who picked it up for $869
          http://whrl.pl/RdXCdG
Talked to some guy behind the counter @Telstra shop in Sydney CBD who says it will be likely around $900/similar to their Samsung S5 offering.

I am seriously doubting the Telstra $672 outright price, can't find a solid source but rumours which have lead all to "CrazyCS", now I'm not accusing of blatant lying, but be cautious until there is a verifiable source which can confirm the "Telstra $672 outright pricing"

He seems to be fairly into phones though, claims of using all past Xperia phones and Galaxys

You are obviously over analysing my responses so I will respond to you

          1. My personal preference is the S5, I did a write up why I prefer it compared to the Z2.
          2. Some of my colleagues are impatient and would rather have it in hand now than look at it from a $ view so they bought it outright at Optus.
          3. You spoke to someone at a Telstra store…. they dont get their staff info kits till next week so they wouldnt know much.
        • +1

*Only available in Black & Purple

Well clearly it's only available in black and white for now
          Thanks for the link.

          http://whrl.pl/RdXDc3
I think the 672 price i posted earlier could be ex gst which is typical with business pricing so it would end up being a $20 difference if this is the case i will get from sony direct

Check that out as well, that would bring it up to $739.20 incl GST.

You are obviously over analysing my responses so I will respond to you
My personal preference is the S5, I did a write up why I prefer it compared to the Z2.

Just checking out sources mate, the stupid way to do an assignment is to copy and paste from wikipedia, the smart way is to not read the wikipedia article (you can if you're lazy, or as a summary), but to use the sources, read them for yourself and verify correct information before paraphrasing possibly incorrect information and getting destroyed for it.

Some of my colleagues are impatient and would rather have it in hand now than look at it from a $ view so they bought it outright at Optus.

Fair enough, it's chump change for some.

You spoke to someone at a Telstra store…. they dont get their staff info kits till next week so they wouldnt know much.

The dude seemed to be very enthusiastic about the Z2.

In regards to business pricing and the claim of ex-gst, from my industry's direct-from-vendor purchases for staff, it seems they also don't include GST in the quoted price for internal purchases.

        • The business pricing for the Z1 was revealed to be $696RRP from Telstra and this eventuated to be the retail price including GST.

        • The business pricing for the Z1 was revealed to be $696RRP from Telstra and this eventuated to be the retail price including GST.

Let's hope so for the non-SonyX members! :)

  • +1

My only complaint/argument is that the Z3 is due out in 3 months because Sony delayed the release of this phone in Australia by 3 months.

    • +5

No need to wait that long, they already announced the Z3 is launching this month.

      Z3 phone

      • Well played sir.

        You got my click.

      • They will delay the actual Aussie release yet again anyway.

      • Hah!.. well played indeed.

  • +1

i just want to know how to become a sony x member?

    • +2

you need to put your name down and do a survey. Then you have to wait for them to invite you. Took me about a month or so to be accepted but it depends on when they to intakes

      • +2

i did the survey just now but didnt sent it ;P

i dont have hundreds of fb friends.
i dont have my own website.
        i dont check fb everyday.
sony is not the no.1 brand imo.
        ……
i dont want to send a picture to them to show how much i love sony :P

Sony Xperia Z3 coming in August 2014

    With a wow specs!

    Octa-core 2.5 GHz processor
4GB RAM (already 3GB RAM in Z2, not its time for more)
5.5 inches native 2K resolution True-IPS display (expected)
    23.7MP Sensor
    Non-removable 3500 mAh battery possible Li-Po
Finger print sensor integrated in display
    microUSB 3.0
    Wi-Fi dual band
    32GB & 64GB memory variants
microSD card support up to 128GB
    Waterproof and dustproof characteristics

    http://appinessh.com/sony-xperia-z3/

    • +5

Not exactly a reliable source for those specs. I'll believe it when Android Police and the like report on it. In any case:

      • 3GB of RAM is already above average, and I very much doubt the vast majority of people would see the difference between that and 4GB. Diminishing returns and whatnot.

      • Octacore seems unlikely. The quad core Snapdragon 805 is far more suitable and will still be setting the bar for performance - completely regardless of the core count.

      • Sony's displays use the Triluminos branding. 'True IPS' has no precedence.

      • We have no strong evidence to suggest that an embedded finger print sensor is viable, let alone ready for prime time.

This seems more like a wishlist written by someone with the 'higher numbers = better' mentality.

    • +1

You could always wait until z3 is out then buy z2. Maybe better price but it will not be the latest greatest as always. Then it will be z4 and so on…

    • +16

Why not just wait for the Z4

      Its got

      Hexa-core 2.85 GHz processor
      5GB RAM
      5.7 inches native 3K resolution UltraTrue-IPS display
      28.7MP Sensor
      Non-removable 4100 mAh battery possible Li-Po
Finger print * Rentina sensor integrated in display
      microUSB 4.0
      Wi-Fi dual band
      64GB & 128 GB memory variants
nanoSD card support up to 512GB
Waterproof and dustproof and bullshit characteristics

      • The only dealbreaker is the size of the screen-5.7 is really too big, don't give me wrong, I am a long time user of Samsung Note, from 1-3, so I am happy with the size(even I wish the note 3 screen could be a bit conservative ).

Other specs are just awesome & amazing !

      • -1

So I'm going from the Z3 with 8 cores to Z4 with 6 cores? Is Sony retarded? As soon as a deal for the Z4 comes out I'm downvoting it.

  • +2

you guys should wait if you think this is a good price
